Traveling back to Texas from Merida in two weeks

We have been living in Cozumel for the past couple of years and will be moving back to Texas and are driving back. We plan to travel from Merida, to Villahermosa, to Veracruz. In Veracruz we may continue to Tampico then Matamoros or Nuevo Progresso to cross back into Texas. I have also considered going from Veracruz to Tamazunchale to CD Mante them on to Matamoros or Nuevo Progresso. Numerous years ago I spent my summers in Tamazunchale and CD Mante and would love to see the area again. Any advice you can provide including pet friendly Hotels will be welcomed.

I would avoid central/southern Tamaulipas and the lower border area like the plague right now. Blog del Narco and Borderland Beat just break the surface in their reporting what is going on. The situation may calm down if Calderon deploys more troops to Tamaulipas as the governer has requested, but it is very unstable at the moment. That is just my advice, but I am not just pulling it out of the air.
