November in San Cristóbal de Las Casas

Our friends from San Cristóbal who are artisans just arrived in Ajijijc to take part in the artisans´ fair in Chapala and they tell us the weather in San Cristóbal is typical of the fall with cold nights near freezing and crystal days of extraordinarily clear and intense sunshine and clarity of vision that must be seen to,be believed. On the other hand, I must take them to the lake as the migratory fowl arrive from northern climes and the ducks are already here soon to be joined by the magnificent white pelicans. What a great time on the lake with sparkling days in the 70s Fahrenheit and fine clean air while Guadalajara suffers fron its winter inversion layer and consequent air pollution. Not a bad place to live out one´s alloted time on the planet.

By the way; this is one fine artisan´s fair which one should not miss. Our friends are iron workers who make exquisite and complex crosses that typically adorn houses and churches in San Cristóbal de Las Casas as a local tradition. These crosses are reputed to bring God´s blessings to the adorned household and even if that proves not to be the case, what a fabulous work of art you will have to bless your home. We already have some to protect us in both Chiapas and Jalisco. No problems so far.

I should have mentioned that our artisan friends from San Cristóbal are named Guadalupe and Maria Estela Hermosillo Escobar. They won so many awards in Chiapas for their splendid iron work that the state refuses now to allow them to compete so some others may have a chance at winning. That egalitarian underpinning is quite typical of rural Mexico actually. They already sold 15 of these unique crosses so if you are interested I suggest you get your butt over there to the fair in Chapala forthwith.

Dawg, we just returned this afternoon to Comala, after an overnight in Ajijic....just to attend said feria! I took my HUGE book of Mexican maestros of artes populares as published by Banamex and was fortunate enough to get to meet your fine friends and get his autograph in same book! Their work is incredibly beautiful and he is truly a national treasure. Good for them to at least have this outlet and provide a chance for the public to become acquainted with their work.

Thank you, Willie. We just returned from Chapala to Ajijic with our friends in tow. What a pleasure it is to hear accolades to their artisanal skills. They will be at the fair tommorow and I recommend those of you interested in Mexican art to go there not just toi visit them but to visit other artisans displaying their handiwork there. What a great day on the shores of this magnificent lake.
