Does anyone know if there any direct flights to Tuxtla Gutierrez from the States, Houston maybe? Thanks!

Found it. Continental flies direct from Houston on Wednsdays and Saturdays. Unfotunately they charge an arm and a leg($494 one way). Spirit Airlines will soon fly out of DFW to Guatamala City via Ft.Lauderdale and roundtrip is considerably less than Continental's one way. I'm modifying my retirement plans, RVing in West Texas much of the year, summers in either Xela, Panajachel, or San Cristobal. Probably can't afford Antigua.

I do not think so but maybe someone knows of one.
Aerobus flies from Tuxtla to Monterrey for a reasonable prices sometimes. There is not much competition for flights to Chiapas so prices are always high.
San Cristobal in the summer? You must like cool to cold and rainy....

Sorry I always get confused between direct and nonstop. There were a couple of US airlines flying into Tuxtla last time I flew there but I do not think they are nonstop.

By the way in the summer you can usually get deals to Cancun, since you are retired fly to Cancun and take bus to whereever you want to go. The buses in Mexico are very good, comfortable, have flexible schedules and are way cheaper then the airlines. They also take you right to town versus out of town. A cab from San Cristobal to Tuxtla is over 500 pesos alone. You can take vans there but after a long flight it can be a pain.

Thanks, did find one airline, Continental. I was thinking of getting to Xela by way of SC but after reading about the summer rain in both locations will look elsewhere. With family obligations I need to be in the States most of the year but would like a place with mild summers to get out of Texas. But it has to be affordable.

Summer rains

Most of them have a pattern: in San Cristobal it rains in the afternoon usually early afternnon. The weather is nice until then then it pours and turns cold as we are at 7100 feet. The rain may last a couple of hours but then it is cold.

On Lake Chapala the rains have a tendency to come at night unless there are pertubations in the Pacific.
Every area has its own mini climate. When the rains come late at night they do not affect the weather that negatively during the day and you can enjoy the day, our favorite time at Lake Chapala is the summer.

In Oaxaca you get afternoon showers but nothing like in San Cristobal as the climate there is arid. The summer weather there is pretty nice around Oaxaca city.

Just study the patterns and you will find the almost perfect place.

Thanks again! I've been looking at places Spirit Airlines flies in Central and South America. They only fly to Cancun in Mexico, which isn't a cheap destination. As Spirit will be flying out of DFW in 2011 it would probably be cheaper to fly with them to somewhere cheap for a few months than to drive into southern Mexico. Are there any discount airlines flying into Mexico from Texas? To tell you the truth, with what's been happening in northern Mexico I'm not wanting to drive my camper through there. Wouldn't mind flying over, but I need to watch my pennies.

You might take a look at the above link for VIVAAEROBUS. They do fly out of Houston to Monterrey and then from their interactive map, it appears that they have a direct flight to Tuxtla. They claim to be a discount airline but I have never compared their actual fares to the competition.
