Departing Sunday Nov 7th through La Mesilla Guatemala to Brownsvlle via Tuxtla. We have read the earlier discussions. If there have been any new developments in road conditions or security concerns, your input would be helpful.

Southern and central Tamaulipas are not particularly stable or secure. I don't know if you would call it a development, but there was an ugly display of the bodies of eight Zeta halcones near Ciudad Mante earlier this week.

To me that incident simply illustrates the instability that exists in that part of Tamaulipas and a graphic example of the inter cartel fighting going on between the Zetas and the Gulf in the area. Chances are you will not actually see anything out of the ordinary. But if it were me, I would take an alternate route. Others will disagree.

There was a major balacera in Matamoros yesterday between the military and the cartels that left at least 40 dead, including Ezequiel Cardenas, the head of the Gulf Cartel. The bridges were closed for most of the afternoon because of fighting in the area near the bridge leading to downtown Brownsville.

This one strikes me differently since I could have easily been there, at that location at that time. I've been needing to get back there to refit a crown and usually take a 3 day weekend and arrive on Friday about noon. I never stayed at the Hotel Residencia but made reservations there once before changing to Hotel Roma. Funny (not literally), in the U.S. you would figure a hotel where lots of federal police are staying would be the safest hotel in town, in Mexico that makes it the most dangerous.

Never heard of it, what road is that on? I've gone 77 dozens of times, only place I've seen radar is Raymondville until you get to the towns south of CC like Kingsville and Bishop.

I didn't question your tip, I asked where exactly is this town located?

Furthermore, a google map search for "dickson tx" turns up nothing.

Once again, which road? There are several roads one could take. I've been on both 77 and 281 and the name rings no bells.

Based on that, and that google search turns up no results at all, and your persistence in not answering the question precisely, I'm going to say you are mistaken in your recollection. Either you received the ticket somewhere else other than south Texas or the name of the area was something else. Maybe officer Dickson gave you a ticket in Raymondville? There is a Dixon, TX about an hour inside Texas - on I-30 going from Arkansas to Dallas.

In any event, your warning of a speed trap is useless if you cannot provide us with the location of the speed trap.

Funny thing, when you google search for "Dickson, TX" it comes by with Did you mean Dickinson, TX? Yeah, Dickinson is on I-45 between Houston and Galveston.

I believe you got a ticket... somewhere. But I'm positive that there is nowhere on highway 77 from Brownsville that the speed limit drops to 40mph until you get to the towns north of the Saritas checkpoint. That is about 2 hours from the border.

Where you do have to watch is around Raymondville, a stretch of 5 or so miles. The speed limit drops to 55mph and it is 70mph on both sides. They sit on the freeway just over bridges, especially on the north end because it's a flat straight desolate 50 miles to the checkpoint (no gas stations, stores, nada) and people will do 80mph or more. The cops get the ones that don't back off as they rejoin civilization, lol.

Mea Culpa, it was DRISCOLL Texas on hwy 77, a virtual blink only shorter, but a vigilant one nonetheless! And they do enforce a sudden 40mph in the middle of bfTexas.

Driscoll, yes I can believe that for sure, that is one of "the towns north of the Saritas checkpoint" just south of Corpus Christi, that I had previously mentioned. It is located between Bishop and Robstown. I see it clearly in my mind. It is very deceiving, doesn't look like a "town". You have this big flat 4 lane highway that looks like you could do 80 and suddenly there is this solitary red light intersection with a few stores on the corners. I often get gas at the Valero there.

Here is a google street view link.
