have been in discussions with an ambulance service from Guadalajara about locating Advanced Life Support ambulance service at Lakeside. This weekend I had a meeting with them as well as a representative of the government (which keeps statistics on accident mortality and also has air ambulance serve (helicopter) at the airport), as well as doctors from hospitals in Guadalajara. All agree that such a service is necessary and possible. They propose a two tiered payment system which would be located west of Ajijic, somewhere in the vicinity of San Juan Cosala so that they would have more rapid access to the west end of the lake as well as Ajijic, and the road to the western part of Guadalajara where most hospitals are located. They see a particular advantage since the construction of Puerta de Hierro Sur on Lopez Mateos, near Wal Mart. They propose a system in which you could either subscribe to the service and in return receive some equipment, possibly an AED (automatic external defribillator) at a very low cost, plus have you home location recorded in their GPS system for quick access, and three ambulance rides per year under the contract service at no additional cost. Or, if people did not want to contract for service, there would be a fee per use. My understanding is that the customary rate for fee per use right now to Lakeside from Guadalajara is about 8000 pesos. It would be the same from Lakeside to Guadalajara, since it would still involve a round trip. They propose working hand in hand with the Red Cross, which provides ambulance service, but does not have professional para medics nor advanced life support, but is perfectly capable of transporting patients who do not have a life threatening situation. I have seen this ambulance and the equipment they provide and it is sort of like brining the emergency room to you. They can stabilize a patient, provide ekg, defibrillation, oxygen, open airways, treat stroke victims and the like. Likewise accident victims can receive advanced life support. They also propose a narrow body ambulance that could fit through the streets of Ajijic. There would be two ambulances and crews at Lakeside 24/7. The question they have is if the foreign population would be interested in a contract version (in my view safer, because there is not the problem of giving directions to the house in an emergency) or if they would avail themselves of the service on an as needed basis. All of their personnel speaks English, by teh way. The owner of the service lived for some years in the US and speaks perfect English. So, if you are interested, please drop me a line at my e mail address and I will compile these results and pass them along. They particularly want to know if people are interested in a contract service because of the need to pinpoint members' homes on their gps system. geonucci@yahoo.com.
