SKY TV title translations

Can't Post | Private Reply
I have SKY TV and I am satified with the programming. The only problem I have is with the the program titles for English programs. The Spanish titles to many movies and HBO specials are so different from the original English, that even with a basic Spanish understanding I can't decipher the English titles.

Does anyone know where there is a site or blog that might have this information, SKY odes not provide it?

Thanks

Rolly

It's not just on the various satellite TV systems--even at the movie theaters the titles of US movies are usually totally different from the originals.

The reason the titles of movies are often completely different in Spanish is that a direct translation of the English title wouldn't necessarily communicate what's desired to a Spanish speaking audience.

Sometimes they translate well directly, but sometimes the title wouldn't be meaningful, or worse, repulsive. It's about correctly marketing the movie to this audience.

Sometimes it's fun to try to figure out how the hell (or why) they come up with the new title, I do admit.

When my partner becomes completely flummoxed with a movie title in Spanish he goes to the imdb (independent movie database) website. By entering one of the stars names, he can click on that actor's film biography. It lists all the films that person has been in by year. Since the channel guide lists when the movie was made, he can usually determine what it was called in English. Bit of work, but it works.

Hello all,

Yep, it took me a couple of years to find out that Somerset Maugham's "Of Human Bondage" had been translated in the Spanish edition of the movie as "Esclavo de deseos," which actually is a better translation than I had ever thought of. I goes right to the nut of the movie without losing anything in the translation. So, if you want to see that movie in Spanish, google the title. As I recall it is in Black and White, but still a very interesting movie with famous stars.

Hasta luego, jerezano
