Cat and Dog Transport by Car from Mexico to United States

I need some quick assistance. I have shot records for my dog and a letter from the vet for my cat and dog stating they are in good health. Do I really need a Mexican government certificate as well? Running out of time! Gracias!

No. The chances are no one will inquire about the papers at all at a border crossing.
If anyone wants to check on your animals, the papers you have now will be enough.
The only place the authorities are diligent about animal papers is at the airline arrivals.

You might want to read up on various comments & reports from the Reynosa region scattered throughout this forum. Conditions (who controls what) are sketchy at best. I, for one, would not be traveling that area by choice with anyone (and that includes myself) or any pet that I loved.

I crossed at Reynosa with SweetPea last week with no problem at all. Well, except my FM3 fell out of the passport and now when I return I will have to get a replacement. Other than that, I quite liked the road around Cd. Victoria.

Have no doubt it was OK on the day, you passed through BUT what if you have been in the area at 1:00PM today? From MILENIO:

The Municipal Government asked the public to avoid approaching the area.
The locks are were reported in the Bypass Bridge Col. Lopez Portillo and Twins.
Witness reports disclosed that the edge of 13:00 in Mil Cumbres and Karachinas a shootout erupted.
The City of Reynosa reported that the Hospital Materno Infantil detonations were heard first and then spread to Jarachinas and Bypass Mil Cumbres.
To avoid affecting the civilian population authorities warned parents and children for us to avoid exposure in public, especially in the area of school zones."

You might consider crossing at Los Indios International Free Trade Bridge. I have crossed there 6 or 7 times and it's convenient for paperwork, quick and easy. The bridge is 10 miles west from San Benito off Hwy. 77. It's a straight drive from there to Hwy 180. The office opens at 9 and closed on Sundays. I like to be there at 8:45 to be first in line. This is a big commercial crossing, but everything is in one little bldg. In this way you avoid both Brownsville and Matamoros completely.

I'm traveling by bus up to the border crossing at Matamoros to bring another lady down to Catemaco. I'll report back on the trip when it's over. I hope she doesn't read about the latest news from that area, she's nervous enough as it is. I'm from Miami, I'm used to gunfire, ducking, running and keeping the doors locked.

Thank you! This more helpful than any response ..and the most sane. Where would u suggest I could spend the night? I am traveling with my dog riding shotgun! I am coming from 6 yrs in Chiapas! With a fully loaded Truck named Zorro!

How could you say it was sane. I missed the whole point of your post, you're coming from Chiapas. Still that crossing is easy and from 180 turn off onto 99 to Valle Hermoso. This runs straight to the bridge and after turning in papers and passing the U.S. inspection it goes straight to Hwy. 77.

I'm afraid I can't help with motels since I travel in an RV. Because of the animals, I suggest the No Tell Motels as they seem less likely to care once that garage closes. Some campgrounds have rooms also.

Speaking of sanity....you named your truck!

Hello lunarae,

I take the Brownsville / Matamoros crossing all the time, Usually at least one time every four to six weeks. To this date I have not ever had a problem at that crossing going into the USA with my Labs and cat. Have always had the animals dog tags and cat tag on their collars and papers (only USA Papers) handy. My windows are tinted so have always let them know right away that I have dogs in the back of the Tahoe. AS most eople here know I am not so fussy about C.D. Victoria, but coming into Victoria from Tula on 101 I have stayed at any number of hotels i Victoria with my pets. Might cost a few pesos more but it is a short 4 hours or so then on to Brownsville. Never and I repeat never had a problem driving along Hwy 101. Last time up to the USA about 4 weeks ago did go through a Major police action of some kind at the river just north of Victoria. Just asked the same old questions and was allowed to pass with out any inspection of my enclosed cargo trailer.
