Mexican Shrimp Cocktail-Recipe

Hello Ed,
Like Chacha I do not measure ingredients, that is why I sometimes hesitate to give out recipies. The following are approximate amounts.

Shrimp cocktail
(coctel de camaron)

1 lb. shrimp(cooked and deveined)
1 1/2 C. tomato juice
juice of 1/2 lemon
1/2 C. catsup
1/2 C. thinly sliced green onions
1 ripe tomato peeled, seeded and chopped
chopped cilantro
a dash or two of worcestershire sauce or more if you prefer.
a dash of tabasco sauce
avocado slices for garnish

Mix all ingredients except avocado and pour over shrimp. Chill for a few hours then spoon into cocktail cups and garnish with avocado slices and
a sprig of parsley or cilantro.

provecho, Gran

Callo de hacha mystery solved!

Can't Post |

I hope Cathi enjoyed her Vuelve a la vida. After a hard night's partying (Nochevieja, perhaps?) this is just the thing.

And I am so grateful to you, Gran, for identifying callo de hacha. I had always assumed it was some mysterious variety of clam, and my dictionaries, including the usually helpful all-Spanish Larousse, were no help. In Spain scallops are vieiras (sea scallops) or zamburiñas (bay scallops). My Salvadoran wife calls them conchas.

Thank heavens for Mexico Connect for solving this mystery! There are several of you -- gran, Chacha and Lovanda come to mind -- who I wouldn't mind meeting in the real world. See you in México!

The vuelve a la vida looks really good! I couldn't find it on the English version of the site though, so if you can just translate two things, I have the rest of it. What are 'ostiones'? And what is 'callo de hacha en trocitos'? Thanks!

Cat

Can you read Spanish? Try the site linked below and click on the Mariscos tab. There's a shrimp ceviche, a marinated shrimp dish served on tostadas, and "vuelve a la vida," the hangover cocktail. ¡Buen provecho!
