We live in Southern Mexico and were pleased to hear on this morning´s news channels from Mexico that very few people were killed by the mudslides in Oaxaca State, Chiapas and Tabasco. They had incorrectly estimated the number of folks killed by counting the houses inundated and buried in mudslides. Thank you jesus. Maybe that is because, as has been our experience in Oaxaca and Chiapas, that everyone building a house down there was in Arizona at the time earning more money to finish the house. Even Mexicans don´t understand the indigenous cultures in rural Oaxaca and Chiapas and Tabasco. Wait! Let me re-phrase that; especially Mexicans don´t understand this.

Now, now, Chicois:

The correct spelling is "deleted". I, Dawg, personally deleted my post because my wife thought me rude and threatened to kick my ass if I did not delete it. The moderator was more generous.

How bad is the flooding in Chiapas? I've read that San Cristobal got hit hard, for example.

20 colonias were affected by flooding. Mostly the aras around the rivers that go through town. La Merced, La Isla Tlaxcala and many other in the northern part of the city on the outskirts.
The problem is that the houses are contaminated with the water from the rivers and people are cleaning up with the same water, many of the areas affected do not have potable water which put the city at risk for deseases.
The historical center is ok as some years ago a large tunnel was built to evacuate flood waters .

Thanks for that. Given the suffering most of those people are enduring, I almost feel guilty asking, because my wife and I are planning to travel there in December and she wanted me to check. I assumed the historic centre would be fine, but you have confrimed that. By then, the rainy season will have ended, in any case.

As you say, Jim, December is the dry season so you should experience no problems since, even if it rains while you are there there should be no flooding problems. You can now see why we spend winters down there and the summer rainy season at Lake Chapala.

December is a great time to be in San Cristóbal as the city is very festive for weeks around Christmas with all sorts of community street activities and great music all over town. Christmas and Easter are the times to be in Chiapas and the best weather is normally from February through April. Chilly nights but sparkling blue skies and midday temperatures in the mid 70s to low 80s fahrenheit after morning ground fog. The unpolluted mountain air at 7,000 feet is remarkably beautiful.

The floods in Chiapas, Oaxaca and Tabasco are a terrible tragedy as the people most effected are the poorest of the poor in the poorest region of Mexico. The floods this year were extraordinarily bad and, as my wife wrote, the rivers that flow through town are filthy with untreated sewage which makes matters even worse. The people most adversly effected are the rural poor back in the mountains who are in real danger from mudslides made even worse by deforestation. It´s hard to conceive of the poverty in these often almost inaccessible areas.

Don´t feel guilty for vacationing down there since tourism (mostly Europeans and Mexicans) is a very important source of local revenue.

Thanx for all of that. We're looking forward to the trip there.
