Temporary Car permit for a truck?

Can't Post | Private Reply
We are planning a trip in November with our California plated 3/4 ton Chevy 2500 HD truck to Guadalajara. I have the information to obtain a vehicle permit BUT: our friends were denied a permit from the Mexicali border office for their Ford F350 pickup, citing their vehicle weight. I am confused about the weight restrictions. Is the 3.5 ton weight restriction for taking a foreign plated vehicle into Mexico for "payload weight", "curb weight", or what?? and is there any documentation that we can take with us to explain our truck's permitability for traveling to Guadalajara?

Trucks up to and including one ton duallies enter Mexico all the time without any problem. We had a dually that crossed into Mexico more than 10 times!!! MH's that weigh much more than 3.5 tons also enter.

That's what I thought....it doesn't make sense to disallow trucks.....my friend was denied and I'll followup with this thread after we try to get ours. Thanks

When I wanted in 2007 to bring a boat here the truck hauling the boat (F350) would not be allowed over the border because it exceeded the specifications and would be considered a vehicle with potential for economic activity. Thus I would have to have a Mexican truck pick the boat up on the US side because the US truck wouldn't be allowed across the bridge to the Mexican side, even just to deliver the boat to the aduana station.

What border entry were you using?....this is the kind of stuff that makes me crazy in Mexico....the rules seem to be inconsistently applied depending on who is at the gate! Thanks

We wanted to come thru Piedras Negras, because that route misses the mountains, or at least the mountain grades areless, but the government rules kept us from even pursuing it at that time..and the fact US gas was $4 a gallon and the upshot was it was way too expensive to attempt that summer.

Well.....to followup, we filled out the online form and had NO problem getting a permit for our 3/4 ton truck. There must have been a problem in communication for our friends and the official went out to their truck and took the "weight" off the sticker inside the door (which is Gross Vehicle Capacity, not load capacity) and wouldn't issue the permit. The official there may have misunderstood the issue and they are going to try again with a pre-registration form. Thanks to all
