They are known as jocote in Chiapas . The tree is being planted to grow the lac insect. It is the insect that is used to make lacquer in Chiapas. Traditionally the lac insect developped on the roots of the timbrales but the trees are being pulled out and it has been discovered that the cochinilla (the lac not the cochinilla grana found on nopales and used as coloring) can be grown on the jocote. The tree is plentiful in Chiapas and is now planted to increase the production of the cochinilla.
