I've been told but I can't get the spelling right for Google. Something like corsuelas or casuelas. It's the small red fruit that tastes somewhat like a plum - big seed.

Ciruelas and they taste like plums because they are!!

Thats the right spelling ... thanks

It's my neighbors tree that hangs over the wall. Had a bunch of kids over picking my guayabas and they noticed the tree. We had to get a ladder and raid it. They've been green up till now so it's the first I've tasted

They are known as jocote in Chiapas . The tree is being planted to grow the lac insect. It is the insect that is used to make lacquer in Chiapas. Traditionally the lac insect developped on the roots of the timbrales but the trees are being pulled out and it has been discovered that the cochinilla (the lac not the cochinilla grana found on nopales and used as coloring) can be grown on the jocote.
The tree is plentiful in Chiapas and is now planted to increase the production of the cochinilla.

And not to be confused with the tejocote which is a crabapple and known as chisté in Chiapas.

In Jalisco, those ciruelas are used primarily to make an agua fresca.
