DavidHF,
What a good turn of a phrase. (I somehow missed it on first reading.)

Makes we wonder what things we do that sometimes make us lightning-rods for things we never imagine exist.

Are there more triggers and trip-wires than the obvious things like flaunting wealth? Gringos wearing ostentatious jewelry in poor markets or ex-Aspenites building beautiful homes in poverty stricken areas seem to be no-brainers.

Are there other more subtle cues?

Does not learning even basic phrases in the local language qualify?
How many of us know: Hello, Goodbye, How are you?, What's your name?, Please, Thank You?
i.e. Of the 100 or so ex-pats I know in Mérida, only 2 of them know the most simple of basic greetings in Maya, even though most of our population here is Maya or Mestiza.

Ma’ uts tin taan.
Ni’ bo’olal.
Ma’alob xi teech yeetel utsil.

Vichil´s above comment can no longer be edited so Dawg has made a correction with Vichil´s permission:

"You (Reefhound) are confused about the trampled down minorities: the Mayas in Belize are in the same boat as are the blacks. The same cannot be said of the (American dilettantes - her wording) who were at the wrong place during the wrong time doing the thing that could get them him in trouble with the locals. Not everyone is happy to see 300 pound crocodiles in their back yard, He is not a local and can leave and go and save the crocs somewhere else, the Mayas do not have that luxury"

* Dawg is simply correcting an error and is not attempting to change what Vichil meant to say nor am I indicating by this posting that I am or am not in agreement with the remark except to say that she is, after all, my wife, which means that I had best agree in general. I did watch televised excerpts of interviews of the Americans on the internet in which the male American called the Maya from San Marcos "savages" and the female American made the statement (and I paraphrase) that (they - the American couple) accomplish more in one day than most people accomplish in a lifetime. These statements made for the television cameras and presumably broadcast in Belize would seem to indicate a lack of mutual respect among the Americans and their "American Crocodile Education Center" and the local Mayan Villagers who may think, as natives of the region, that they already have an education regarding crocodiles in Belize.

Well, what the hell. I just spent the past hour explaining why the incident regarding the "American Crocodile Education Center" in Belize could happen just as easily in the Chiapas Highlands around San Cristóbal de Las Casas and just as I was proofing my comment the electricity went off and all was lost. The more I thought about it the more I realized that that really doesn´t matter so I´m not retyping it. People who get my drift get it anyway and those who don´t never will. Fortunately, the types of readers who don´t get this will never move to Chiapas anyway and will be attracted instead to Lake Chapala so, as Alfred E. Neuman said, "What me worry?"

Those comments indicate a lack of respect NOW. There may or may not have been a lack of respect beforehand. I don't know. (And even if there was, I'm still amazed that some think disrespectful words justifies violent actions.) But it's perfectly understandable that one who has just been victimized by a mob and had their home and all their belongings burned to the ground to lose respect for and even despise the perpetrators.

As to this idea that the immigrants are in the wrong because they are not from there and can move on to somewhere else, tell me does this standard apply to immigrants in the U.S. as well? Don't bother, I've already seen that many of you will sacrifice principles and fairness for the sake of fitting in, and anyone can justify anything if they are willing to do that.

I'm done with it. Let it lie. Dawg, finish your story.

What in God's name does it matter who is right and who is wrong when you are dealing with what is. As the angry Mayans are burning my lily white ass out of their territory am I going to be saying:
"But I was right, you guys need to see that your behavior is not acceptable." ?

Those of us who live in close proximity to the indigenous people here in Yucatan and Chiapas are overwhelmed at times at the amount of superstition and xenophobia that is extremely close to the surface even amongst city people. It is not something that will change any time soon. Those of us who ignorantly step over the boundary will pay a price, usually not as severe as being burned out but there will be a price.

I think your use of the phrase "heart of darkness" pretty muchs sums up where you're coming from.
