Internet speed.

I can't believe it. In Mexico with the Telmex Prodigy intermediate speed package I usually get about 85% of the up to (hasta) 2 meg download speed and about 75% of the upto .384 meg upload speed. (I usually get 1.7 or so down and .29 to .30 up)

In Seattle I subscribe to the slowest Comcast internet package. This is the speed I got today. I don't know the advertised speed

[URL=http://www.speedtest.net]

What kind of internet speeds are you getting in your part of Mexico? Please mention the advertised speed (if you know it) as well as what you are getting. Thanks

PS I use http://www.speedtest.net/

I'm getting 3.49/.32 of a promised hasta 5 from Telmex infinitum (via Mexico City). My question is how do you copy/paste and/or print the Speedtest.net results? I can't do it.

Showoff.

My Telmex is down right now but it should be up in 24-72 hours or so they said when I called to report the intermittent outage. When it is up my hasta 5mb (which is really only 4mb - Telmex support says they're doing the best they can) pretty consistently shows 3.5 down over .30 up.

Telecable (5 y 6 down, 2 up) is still up although I've had a couple of mornings when all the lights on the modem were flashing on and off and the internet was down. Modem reboots fixed it but that was odd. Most speed tests show the up near or over 2.0mb but right now it's off just a bit at what might be considered a normal value.

In answer. It's real simple. here for example is what I got
[URL=http://www.speedtest.net]

When you get your speed and ping test, A block will show up like what you see above. Immediately below where it says
Ping XXXms is a block titled "Copy Forum Link". Left click thereon and then place your mouse arrow where you want to show the data and then while holding down the control (ctrl) button also hold down the letter V

I hope that helps

Downloading entertainment in Mexico is hit and miss over the internet. Speeds are very slow there. However if you're from Seattle, you can receive ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX in HD and PBS in SD using Shaw Direct, the Canadian satellite system. (channels 4,5,7,9, and 13) using a very small satellite dish.)

The best entertainment in Mexico isn't "downloadable".

Really. This is good news.

In about 30 minutes I downloaded 4 TV shows broadcast last night. Three were from the US and one from Channel 10 Australia. TV commercials are really annoying and will get worse as we head toward the November elections.

John, you've become an expert at downloading programming and I thank you for sharing your experiences with us. Me I'm too lazy. I will admit though, that I will be playing around with my 12 foot prime focus, very close mesh C/Ku band dish. My hope is that this 12 footer will receive a stronger signal than my 2.4 meter offset dish. (The mesh is so tight, I can't get a large pencil lead through the mesh)

Just maybe, I will again be able to get all the desired Dish Network channels from the birds at 119 and 129 and what's left on 110.

PS rumor has it that if too many folks start downloading too many programs (to much volume) the the Mexican ISPs will put download volume limits on their clients. Comcast had to do so. They're at 250 G per month, which is quite a bit.

I know of two ISPs in Mexico that clamp down ones internet speed to not much faster than dialup should a person download too much. So far to the best of my knowledge, neither infinitum nor telecable do so.

Hi Julian:

Here are my latest results [URL=http://www.speedtest.net]

Even the backbone to Mexico from Seattle seems alright. It's just the Mexican ISPs that seem to clamp down the connection speeds.

In answer to your question, I will PM you.

I am posting this speedtest.net test result in order to give an example of the "fluctuation" I am getting in internet speeds on my 2mb Telmex connection. The last several months, when I randomly test my speed, I sometimes get an incredibly fast reading. However, my normal reading is usually like what I previously posted above: in the range of 1.7mb/0.3mb.

This morning I tested my speed 3 times in a row and got the following readings: 6.1mb/0.18mb, 15.77mb/0.22mb, and 4.85mb/0.26mb.

Pete

A question for the "EXPERT"

I have given up XM Radio here in the Portland area and choose to listen to Internet radio. I needed an alternative, as the FM reception at my home in the low lying Salmon Creek basin is lousy.

Internet radio stations (world wide) and Pandora Music are FREE and I find them completely satisfying, using my wireless Comcast with speeds similar to your Seattle results

Can I stream both these audio options in MX with my Telmex wireless easily and without a struggle at the internet speeds I see listed in this thread?

Just curious........

I am not the expert, but the answer to your question is probably not. I used to have a computer that had Pandora preloaded in it. Whenever I would click on it, I would immediately get the message that Pandora is not available outside of The United States.

I tried using several of the programs that hid my ISP, but none of them worked for me. They always knew I was in Mexico. They do work in some areas in Mexico. It is iffy though and probably depends on the area you are in, who the Internet service provider is, etc. I use a Cablemas Internet connection here in Cuernavaca and not (never) Telmex.

I do have a couple of US radio stations I can listen to on my computer, but you must have the URL for their US website if they have one. This is one of them: http://www.warm1069.com/ It is in the Seattle area. There are a few others, do a Google search to find them.

Watching US TV stations free is also generally blocked down here on the Internet. There are a very few exceptions, such as http://www.okilydokily.ca/?page_id=132 clunky, but sometimes possible.

I have basically given up on listening to anything in English free here, less frustration, angst, and expense. I do listen to some music CD’s here, I don't care what language they are singing in, if the music is good, it is enjoyable.

We also watch DVDS sometimes. We have a multi region DVD player, and I have multi region programs in my computers to watch them too. The things we look for when buying DVD s now is what idioms (languages) and subtitles are available on them. My Mexicana wife prefers to watch movies in English with Spanish subtitles, I do too. We have bought some classic DVD movies in Spanish only. So my wife and her Mom can enjoy movies in their own language, in their own country, in their own home too. Legal, non-pirated DVD s are inexpensive to cheap here, most cities also have a Blockbuster store to rent DVD s here too.

If you are going to bring a DVD player down from The States, check on this site to find out if there is a hack for it to make it multi regional, or to watch region 4 (Mexico) DVD s. http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks

My internet bandwidth is more than enough to usually and I say usually stream audio from the US and Canada without interruption. I've been streaming the station papirex suggested now for maybe 45 minutes. It's from my home town Seattle, and one I sometimes listen to up there and down here. Not one interruption. In the olden days most all stations from the US were available via the internet. But as papirex pointed out, more and more are being blocked and just as fast as we find a way around the blocking, the folks at the other end find a way to block us.

But there are still a lot of US stations you can still get here in Mexico. Me, I stopped playing around, which can be fun by the way. Speaking of giving up your XM account, I just hooked up a new "in house" XM radio in a boom-box for the house yesterday.

I also get radio stations via Shaw Direct (The old Star Choice) Most of the radio and music stations are from Canada, and about 8 stations from one City in the US. What State did Shaw Direct choose? Washington State of course, but sadly the city is Spokane, not Seattle. So between the internet, and Shaw Direct, I would have most of the stations I might miss from the States and Western Canada.

Hey give it a try without, XM. It might be fun. An I bet you can find much of what you're looking for online. Good luck
