Not only is it a shame that another of the older airlines in the world has gone down the tubes (even if only temporarily) but this may end up being a real blow to the tourism industry in Mexico. According to the following article, the flight capacity in Mexico has now been reduced by 42%:

http://www.informador.com.mx/...utas-de-mexicana.htm

For the remaining troubled airline industry, this may prove to be an opportunity to raise fares and further limit interest in Mexico for vacations. On top of this bad news, Puerto Vallarta has announced the closing of their airport runway for repairs from 11PM to 7AM starting in October for six months. They are projecting a serious loss of revenue during these prime vacation months:

It is a shame. We used to prefer to fly to Mexico on Mexicana. It was like you were in Mexico the minute that you stepped on board.

Luckily, airplanes are a very mobile asset. Any given airline could lease additional aircraft if they perceived enough passengers willing to pay profitable prices for tickets. US Airlines will be increasing their flights to Mexico, some of that has already happened. In other words, supply and demand will correct any shortage of airline seats, although this will not happen overnight. Of course, when you reduce capacity in any business prices tend to increase.

I saw the claim that Mexicana pilots were paid more than airline pilots for major US airlines. Labor costs were cited as a key reason for their financial problems.
