For me, the difference between being rentista and being able to work is that in the first situation, you have to prove you have a certain minimum income from pensions, investments, etc. With the second, you don't have to prove any minimum income at all, but you do have to pay taxes on the income you bring in from working in Mexico. It can be a very small amount, just a couple of thousand pesos, for example.
