Anyone know if the road from SMA to Piedras Negras is open yet?

I am wondering if anyone has successfully traveled south from Peidras Negras to Saltillo or San Miguel since all the storm damage. I'm leaving Oaxaca tomorrow and SMA on Thursdayto go home to New Mexico and I'd really rather not travel through Nuevo Laredo. I haven't been able to locate any current information. Thanks so much!

Here is a picture of the work on the new bridge. The builders are not giving a completion estimate.
A temporary bridge is expected to be in place in the next few days. Sketchy details here.

Thanks, Rolly! I'm asking around in SMA but so far no one has additional information. I need to check the detour noted in the article you appended to see if it will work for me. It looks like there's hope, at least....

The detour that is mentioned in the article looks like the road to Melchor Musquiz that exits off Hwy 57 about 40 miles north of Monclova. Before Musquiz there is turn to the right that leads back to Nueva Rosita. I have never driven that road but the secondary roads in Coahuila are generally in decent condition.

There haven't been any public shootouts in Nuevo Laredo for a week now, but armed groups are definitely roaming the streets. There are reports that the Gulf cartel has moved people into the city to try and take advantage of the military offensive against the Zetas. My wife witnessed an incident yesterday at 4 pm--two extended cab pickups with armed men stopped on Reforma between the Wal-Mart shopping mall and Soriano, blocking traffic. I'm not sure the purpose of these tactics but I suspect they were looking for someone who they were tipped was in the area. They communicate by hand held radio to track the movement of the military and rival groups. Fortunately a military patrol didn't happen to pass by.

This website contains minute by minute updates from people in various parts of the city. The incident my wife witnessed is described by several people around 5 p.m. yesterday on the blog. It also has a Coahuila section so you might check there for information on road conditions, although it can be difficult to decipher text, shorthand Spanish.
