101 most beautiful small towns in MexicoOne Hundred and One Beautifull Small Towns in Mexico by Guil

Hello all,

One Hundred and One Beautiful Small Towns in Mexico by Guillermo Garcia O and Cristobal Garcia S (2008) lists what they conclude to be the most beautiful small towns in Mexico.
My list would include some of these, though I haven't been to most of them.

What towns that would be on your list? Dawg has done extensive traveling. What towns would you list, Dawg? Are you in agreement with those listed for Chiapas or for Jalisco?

I assume they are classifying archaeology sites as "small towns" Piste, where Chichen is located is a hole and I have never seen any charm to Palenque, the town, though it has improved over the years. Uxmal is not a town ,though there are some nice enough towns near there. I have never seen any sort of town at Edzna in Campeche. Bonampak is no town. Monte Alban is no town.

This list could be very misleading if you headed off someplace expecting a town with the normal services found in a town. Not that you will starve in Mexico, you can always find a restaurant, but gasoline, a place to sleep. These are another matter.

Zinacantan and San Juan Chamula are butt ugly and I cannot think of one indigenous city I would call beautiful. The settings are beautiful, the towns are not.

The town of Palenque is ugly although the ruins, of course, are beautiful . I would have a different section for the ancient Mayan cities such as Palenque, Bonampak , Yaxchilan and Tonina as they are not inhabited any longer.

I consider Chiapa de Corzo and Comitan charming and pleasant towns, picturesque more than beautiful as long as you stay close to the center.

The beauty in Chiapas is in nature and outside of what the Mayas built and the churches the Spaniard built there is not much beauty in its cities, they can be interesting, charming and many other things but beautiful? I do not think so.

The list in general is very misleading. One beautiful church does not make a beautiful city. One pretty plaza does not make a city beautiful. In most colonial cities the centers are interesting and some are beautiful but the rest of the town may have nothing beautiful about it.

Many cities in Mexico are picturesque, charming , interesting ,some have beautiful centers some have a beautiful church but calling many of these cities beautiful is a stretch. All ruins should be on a separate list.

It is interesting that the term 'most beautiful' was used. Some of these I have been to and would describe them as being 'worthwhile to visit', but not beautiful. Cabo and Todos Santos in Baja Sur fall into this category, for example, as does Cómala, Dolores Hidalgo, Tapalpa, Mazamitla, Bernal (big disappointment to me!), Jalpan, Santa Clara del Cobre, Tzintzuntzan, Cozumel, Isla Holbox (the town is hardly beautiful but whoa what a great, lay-back, off-the-beaten-path retreat!!!), Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen (in the ole days) and Valladolid.

Those on the list that I've been to that do make my 'beautiful' list are, drum-roll,...... Izamal, the Yellow City!!, Pátzcuaro, Alamos, San Sebastián del Oeste if only for the setting, Guanajuato for sure but I consider it a city, and jerazano's own Jerez. I'm sure that Campeche would have made my list but I ran into a time-crunch that precluded my making it there.

Others on the list that I hope to visit this winter and declare 'beautiful' are: Valle De Bravo, Cuernavaca, Taxco, San Cristóbal de las Casas and Chiapa de Corzo, Palenque (site), Tlaxcala, Coatepec, Los Tuxtlas and Tlacotalpan.

COAHUILA
* Parras

I've been to Parras several times. I would call it nice, but not beautiful especially when you drive the streets on the mountainside away from the main drag; they really suck.

COLIMA
* Cómala

I have enjoyed my visits to Cómala, heard some fine music on the terraza of hotel on the plaza, and ate some excellent botanas. There is a nice little museum. But I'm hard pressed to see it as beautiful. There is an interesting old church on the plaza.

The more I think about it, the more I think my Lerdo is at least as good looking as either of these two.

Since lists like that are always subjective and silly, I feel safe in calling that list subjective and silly.

The 'small town' label is kind of strange, given that a number of them have populations (2005 census) of over 100,000. Campeches is about 205,000. Zacatecas has fewer people than this, so why is it not on the list?

(Last winter I was talking to somebody about the "Pueblos Magicos" and I asked about some place or another "Well, why isn't xxxx a Pueblo Magico?" And the answer was "Because it's not a pueblo--it's a city!")

Of the ones on this list that I've seen, I'd give thumbs up to SCLC, Guanajuato, Campeche, Yuriria, Lagos de Moreno, Mazamitla, Patzcuaro, Izamal, Bacalar.

I'd probably leave off the list Palenque (town), San Juan Chamula, Tzintzuntzan, Tulum. Also, I agree that Edzna, Uxmal, Chichen Itza, etc. do not belong.

Then I'd have to visit a whole bunch of other small towns before making a decision one way or the other regarding Mexcaltitan, Jerez, Dolores Hidalgo, Tequila, PV. (All I know about Guadalupe is the museum and the park, really.)

I guess I'm on the fence as to Ajijic.

Places I've been that I would consider for inclusion--Amatlan de Canas, Real de Asiento, Valle de Juarez.

I look forward to reading more about this list on the Mexconnect homepage.

PS--Jerezano, you mention a Buenavista in Nayarit. My Guia Roji has about 35 (!) Buenavistas (or Buena Vista) but shows none in Nayarit. Are you perhaps thinking of BellaVista, just outside Tepic? If so, I will agree with you that this could be a good candidate. There's certainly no question about its being a small town and it looks like it would be a nice place to live!

Hello Tony and all,

Not a coincidence at all. My source WAS the geo-mexico site. I did not give you credit because the quote was from the list by the authors.

My purpose for the post was your remark that >>>We will be publishing a review of this book on our blog in a few days time.
Tony<<<<<

I thought you might wish some input from our mexconnect.com friends before you made that review.

Too, there are other questions about what the authors consider to be a SMALL town and as to what they are really considering as BEAUTIFUL.. For example Real de Catorce is NOT under any imagination a beautiful town. In fact it is rather ugly. Extraordinary views of the surrounding countryside far below can be had from outlooks there; there is an exceedingly interesting church to San Antonio ; the entrance to the city through the old mining tunnel is not only intesting but surprising but as to overall beauty forget it. I can see why it was designated as a Pueblo Mágico, but it is no place to spend more than a few hours.

If I did wrong, forgive me but my intentions were good, and the comments so far, at least to me, have been worthwhile.
The one I value most is that the list could be misleading because it includes wonderful archeological sites that have no beautiful towns near them at all; such as Monte Albán.

Hasta luego, jerezano

Think a book like this is more about creating a promotional angle, for sales.

Something like, what was that book called, (or it's countless imitators) Best Places to Kiss....in...........(name your preference:):)

Some of my favorite small towns aren't on that list.

The kind of town, where amigos who live there, say, they get a few foreign tourists, every year. A car or RV will roll up the cobblestone streets, park in front of the iglesia,the people will get out, walk the plaza for a few minutes, and then leave, muttering to each other,
"Not much to see! Why did we drive all the way here?"

The kind of place, where, the beauty, in the people and their daily lives, is somewhat hidden from outside eyes. However, the kind of beauty, the people there, readily share with the sincere.

What towns would you list, Dawg? Are you in agreement with those listed for Chiapas or for Jalisco?

Well, jerezano:

Frankly, I wouldn´t use the word beautiful to describe any city I know in Chiapas or Jalisco. Some are charming and/or blessed with beautiful architecture but my opinion of the towns designated in Chiapas would be just that; my opinion.
That having been said:

The only town in Chiapas that I know of with an abundance of beautiful architecture is San Cristóbal de Las Casas and that beautiful architecture is concentrated in the historic center which is surrounded by uninspired and pedestrian row housing for the most part as far as the eye can see surrounded, in turn, by festering hillside slums of the most dismal sort. Now, that historic center could in and of itself be categorized as beautiful and inspiring and, when I am down there, my daily walk through the center is a great pleasure for me. For those who have not been there, a trip to San Cristóbal is well worth the trouble and the city is an historic treasure. They are burying the utility lines now which will make the town even more extraordinary.

Chiapa de Corzo and Comitan are both charming and attractive towns but I would classify neither as beautiful. Chiapa de Corzo is in a spectacular setting on the Rio Grijalva and it´s actually a town I would love to live in except for the beastly hot weather. Comitan is not in a spectacular setting but it is a very pleasant small city of regional importance.

The ruins at Yáxchilan, Bonampak and Palenque are indeed beautiful but these are ancient ruins, not towns by any stretch. If the author is speaking of the town of Palenque near the ruins, there is nothing even remotely beautiful or even attractive about it except for a few isolated areas within the city meriting a visit while fulfilling the goal of visiting the nearby ruins.

The indigenous municipalities of Zinacantan and Chamula could hardly be classified as beautiful by just about anyone´s standards. What one may call Zinacantan and Chamula are actually villages constituting central administrative centers and the local architecture in each municipality is what I would classify as functonal at best. These administrative villages are surrounded by large tracts of land where the general population of the municipality lives in dispersed communities and isolated dwellings. The mountainous countryside surrounding these municipal centers is very beautiful but the presence of mankind has not improved the former wilderness. Many would be surprised to know that the populalation of the municipality of Chamula is well over 100,000 people with most living in the wilderness surrounding the administrative center unobserved by tourists.

I love Chiapas and have traveled much of its territory since we moved there in 2006 but I posit that the beauty in Chiapas is in nature for the most part, not in the usually nondescript human settlements that dot the countryside.

As for Jalisco, when there we live in Ajijic which I find charming and picturesque with beautiful surroundings but with motley and inconsistent architecture. I would never categorize the town as beautiful. The natural surroundings of the town including the magnificent lake and craggly mountains to the north and west are magnificent as well but the town is unremarkable. Now, as we know, this is all just opinion but my favorite part of Ajijic and, for that matter, all of the north lakeshore area from the Poncitlan Municipal line on the east to Jocotepec on the west, is Lower La Floresta. I love that leafy neighborhood and would be living there had there been a nice house for sale there when we moved here in 2001.

I´ll leave it to others to discuss the rest of small city Jalisco since my travels outside of the Chapala municipality have been somewhat restricted since we bought a home in Chiapas except for our periodic excursions to Guadalajara.

...there is nothing even remotely beautiful or even attractive about it (Palenque town) except for a few isolated areas within the city meriting a visit while fulfilling the goal of visiting the nearby ruins.

I feel it is my civic duty to elaborate on what is interesting to see in this hardscrabble burg which, despite its ramshackle appearance, is surrounded by splendid jungle scenery on its periphery. After having been there a few times while seasonally in Chiapas, I have found two things worth a visit. First, there is a small hotel row surrounded by a parklike jungle sitting amidst an otherwise ugly commercial district just as one enters town and heads toward the town center. This is by far the best place to stay if one elects to stay in town versus adjacent to the ruins a few kilometers away. There are several nice hotel/motels there surrounded by this pleasant jungle enclave and this is a fine place to spend the night not only because there are some nice accomodations there but also because there are some good restaurants set amidst the hotels and, after a long auto journey to get to the area, it is nice to stay in the beautiful jungle setting and be able to walk a short distance for meals and/or drinks without driving anywhere. An unanticipated bonus for staying in this enclave is the howler monkeys whose strange serenade awakens one in the morning. The second interesting thing in town, and this just about completes the inventory of things to see and do in Palenque town, is the Burger King near the principal plaza and that´s it. You may now leave Palenque town content with having experienced everything important to have experienced there.

There is one other thing but I wouldn´t count on happening upon this if you visit, but the last time we were there, we drove up on a shootout among drug traffickers in big old pickup trucks right in the heart of town. This is not a highly recommended adventure but, since we survived without becoming collateral damage, we found it exciting if a bit disconcerting.

For starters, let's take Michoacán.

Quote
* Pátzcuaro--Reluctant agreement.
* Santa Clara del Cobre
* Zirahuén

My opinions:
Pátzcuaro is charming and beautiful in places, especially around the Plaza Grande, which was recently renovated. The Portal Hidalgo is nearing end of renovations now, and looks more attractive. There are several colonias of Pátzcuarothat are attractive, but not necessarily in a comventional sense. The most photographed place is probably the arches of El Sagrario, which is o.k. but I like Calle Ahumad from Siete Esqinas to Plaza Grande, and the two neighboring callejones descending from Plaza Chica/Calle Lloreda. They are Títere and Tijeras.

Bernal, QTO: a plished jewel, but too precious for my taste except for an afternoon visit and maybe an overnight stay. You can get tooth decay from over exposure.

Cuetzalan, Puebla, agreed, especially if you like rain. There’s a lot more to Cuetzalan, but it’s underground.

SCdlCasas, great place, at least it was when we were there in 1993.

Santa Clara de Cobre is, IMO, unattractive, except perhaps for it kiosco de cobre on the plaza.

Guanajuato City: my second most favorite fascinating CITY in Mexico. My first is Mexico, D.F.: Colonias, Coyoacan, Roma, Condesa, parts of Centro. Hardly a small town.

Zirahúen town Michoacán is extremely ugly and has some of the worst streets of any town in Michoacán. The LAKE is beautiful, especially from a distance. Overall, I think even the lake is overrated.

Tzintzuntzan: the courtyard of the church-convent is beautiful, and then???

Adding to the Michoacán list: Ziracuarétiro, which is a very small place with some of the best, and most beautiful restaurants in Michoacán. The setting is semi-tropical, and lush with avocado, mangos and zarzamoras. The town is low key and otherwise nondescript.

Cacahuamilpa's Grutas, Gro. are world class, but is it a TOWN?

Overall, the list strikes me as a marketing attempt to include more towns as Pueblos Mágicos.

Saludos,
Anonimo

Since I live in the state of Veracruz, I'll put in my two pesos worth of comment.

* Coatepec – good choice

* Los Tuxtlas – Santiago Tuxtla is the only one that qualifies, while San Andres is one of the ugliest in all of Veracruz. Catamaco is only beautiful along the waterfront.
* Papantia huh
* Tlacotalpan a ghost town except during candelaria. Nice buildings but where are the people?

Towns that should be mentioned: Xico, Naolinco
_______

I am not terribly impressed with the 101 list either, although it does list some interesting towns. As others have said, in some cases it lists an archeological site as if it was a town, or where the town next to the archeological site is not interesting in itself.

To me, the more interesting list is the UN World Heritage Site list. I have been to about half these places, and every one that I have visited has been worth my time. Note that some are towns, and others are archeological sites or natural sites.

* Agave Landscape and Ancient Industrial Facilities of Tequila, Jalisco
* Ancient Maya City of Calakmul, Campeche
* Archaeological Monuments Zone of Xochicalco, Morelos
* Archeological Zone of Paquimé, Casas Grandes, Chihuahua
* Central University City Campus of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), Mexico City
* Earliest 16th-Century Monasteries on the Slopes of Popocatépetl, Puebla and Morelos
* Franciscan Missions in the Sierra Gorda of Querétaro
* Historic Centre of Mexico City and Xochimilco
* Historic Centre of Morelia, Michoacán
* Historic Centre of Oaxaca and Archaeological Site of Monte Albán, Oaxaca
* Historic Centre of Puebla, Puebla
* Historic Centre of Zacatecas, Zacatecas
* Historic Fortified Town of Campeche, Campeche
* Historic Monuments Zone of Querétaro
* Historic Monuments Zone of Tlacotalpan, Veracruz
* Historic Town of Guanajuato and Adjacent Mines
* Hospicio Cabañas, Guadalajara, Jalisco
* Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California
* Luis Barragán House and Studio
* Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, Michoacán and Estado de México
* Pre-Hispanic City of El Tajín, Veracruz
* Pre-Hispanic City and National Park of Palenque, Chiapas
* Pre-Hispanic City of Chichén-Itzá, Yucatán
* Pre-Hispanic City of Teotihuacan, Estado de México
* Pre-Hispanic Town of Uxmal, Yucatán
* Protective Town of San Miguel and the Sanctuary of Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco, Guanajuato
* Rock Paintings of Sierra de San Francisco, Baja California Sur
* Sian Ka'an, Quintana Roo
* Whale Sanctuary of El Vizcaíno, Baja California Sur

Our own Tony Burton has an article on Mexico's world heritage sites.

http://www.mexconnect.com/...ntry-in-the-americas

There is a list of towns which have applied to be world heritage sites. I have only been to a couple of them, so I could not comment on that list

And of course there is the list of "Pueblos Magicos" below. Presumably there is a list of towns that have applied to be on that list.

Bacalar
Bernal
Capulálpam de Méndez
Coatepec
Comala
Corsalá y El Fuerte
Creel
Cuetzalan
Cuitzeo,
Santa Clara del Cobre y Tlalpujahua
Dolores Hidalgo
Huamantla
Huasca de Ocampo y Real del Monte
Izamal
Jeréz de García Salinas
Mazamitla y Tapalpa
Mier
Parras de la Fuente
Pátzcuaro
Real de Asientos
Real de Catorce
San Cristóbal de las Casas
Santiago
Tapijulapa
Taxco
Tepotzotán y Valle de Bravo
Tequila
Todos Santos

I would suggest that the World Heritage list is the best, with Pueblos Magicos next, and the 101 list well behind the other two.

One list that I have not seen is a list of small towns where someone might want to live. I could not imagine living in Palenque city, no matter how beautiful the ruins are. Real de Catorce is too remote. Mazamitla, maybe. Tapala, maybe. Tequila, maybe. Todos Santos, too many Americans, but maybe. Izamal, too hot in the summer, but maybe. Catemaco, too hot in the summer, but maybe. But of course any city that one might propose has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Beauty is in the "eye of the beholder" .

When the Mexican eye looks at a town with manicured lawns and flower beds etc' but not many people with children "Out and about", they do not see a "Beautiful Town".

Look up the definitions of beautiful and all of the synonyms to come to the realization that there is no "one size fits all" in the use of this adjective or in this case, a noun plural. Replace "small towns" with "women" and again there would not be a consensus.

"the olive trees and perhaps the stations of the cross are the oldest in Mexico."

(the Stations are out side, and the original stations predated the church)

¿What is written on the sign in the church yard?
