A Visit to Oaxaca City

Can't Post | Private Reply
A friend and I are planning a visit to Oaxaca (y alrededores). We'll be arriving by bus on August 1 and staying about a week. While I'm really looking forward to this trip (haven't been to Oaxaca for maybe 15 years), I am concerned that the teachers union will still be on strike when we get there. I understand they kind of take over the Zócalo during this annual event, making it hard for the rest of us to enjoy this usually idyllic spot. Information from anyone currently living in Oaxaca would be greatly appreciated!

With school out I would think a teachers' strike would be an empty gesture. If not, it may last all summer before anyone tries to come to terms with them.

I'd appreciate suggestions for places to eat while my friend and I are in Oaxaca, especially restaurants or cafes or sidewalk vendors who sell Oaxacan specialties at non-exorbitant prices.

The above restaurant is my favorite in Oaxaca. The food is fresh and fresh tasting. It is not pretentious. The prices are fair.

This link works.

We have eaten there 2 or 3 times and it has for the most part been enjoyable. I especially enjoyed the camarones a la diabla, in a unique presentation.
