a tortilla press abroad

I`m a design student in Glasgow, Scotland and my current brief is to design a "travelling companion" for a Mexican staying in Scotland.

Our research has shown that the common cast iron tortilla press is too heavy to travel with and that there is never any suitable corn flour available! It would be useful if anyone could tell me more about their experience of trying to cook mexican while abroad.

What other methods are there for making tortillas without a press and how useful would a lighter, portable press be?

Hope you can help and meanwhile we will enjoy practising our tortilla technique.

If it's corn tortillas, you can just use the bottom of a big dish (plate). Just put some plastic (or wax paper) on the counter/table top, place the dough ball in the center, place another sheet of plastic/wax paper over the dough ball and press down with a plate. If you have one with a nice ridge at the bottom of it, you can always get perfectly round tortillas with a uniform thickness ;)

Hope that helps some.

God bless...

How about your hands...never tried it and I'm sure the tortillas would be a little thicker than normal. Why can't you use a rolling pin to make corn tortillas (you'd still have to put the dough between two pieces of saran wrap or something similar)?
