US and Mexican governments take action against money laundering

"MEXICO CITY – In the past two years, Mexico and the United States have confiscated $60 million in their joint fight against money-laundering, the U.S. embassy says. During a recent press conference, the embassy reported on the results of a four-year joint investigation that detected money-laundering activities in the Wachovia bank in the U.S. Starting this January, customs authorities of both countries re-launched the “Firewall” operation on the Mexico-U.S. border. This program has aided in the confiscation of more than $3.6 million and almost $180, 000 in counterfeit bills. The operation has also confiscated 20 kilograms (44 pounds) of cocaine and 3 tons of chemical precursors. “Agencies of both countries are cooperating to establish programs and to develop strategies that will optimize the reduction of money-laundering activities among criminal organizations,” the embassy said."
