With apologies to our esteemed web jefe, this thread has been a great trip down memory lane. The reference to Melrose Avenue being a swank venue brought a chuckle: in the mid-fifties, it was replete with used clothing and furniture stores and lots of for-rent signs. Times do change. Bob's Big Boy in Toluca Lake was the big Hollywood High School draw (no Bob's in Hollywood, only Tiny Naylor and some soda shops so we had to head for the Valley- Fri. & Sat. nights were Hot Rod Heaven). You could almost hold their thick shakes upside down like a Dairy Queen these days-straws were of little use...;o). Hamburger Hamlet on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood was the place to get your "upscale" burger until I left So. Calif. for the Norwegian Riviera (Minnesota) in the mid-60's. The Hamlet didn't have a place in beautiful Downtown Hollywood then. For a steak: Musso Franks on Hollywood Blvd. Prime Rib: Lawry's on La Cieniga. Chinese: Chinatown in downtown L.A.; had an addiction for Shu Mai. Hot Dogs: Pinks, in the Fairfax area near the Farmer's Market. Wouldn 't it be great to be a time traveler and go back and sample them all over again? Or does present memory accurately reflect that long-ago reality? Think I'll stick with the memory.

OK; that's enough about burgers. Why not try "tamales" next?
