Ethics in Mexico.

Ethics;have been written about recently in Mexico. It has been claimed, by all Merchants other than Wal-Mex,that the practice of publishing competitors prices is "Unethical" but not "Illegal" in Mexico. Can any one explain how this is "considered" unethical.?

It was on the news here in Jalisco. But, I think the complaint was that the competitor's prices they had listed, were inaccurate.

Wal-Mart explains low supplier charges
MEXICO CITY -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the discount chain that is the subject of a Mexican government investigation of anti-competitive practices, said its distribution system allows it to win lower prices from suppliers. ANTAD's board tentatively resolved in an Oct. 4 meeting to ban the price comparison practice as part of a new ethics policy for members designed to "raise the standards for commercial ethics of its members."

This is the ethics of the business community. It's ok to promote your business with all kinds of advertising using tits and ass and payment plans, but comparing your prices in pesos and centavos to those of your specific competitors tends to promote price cutting and cuts into everyone's profits.

Thank you for the information. Guess it makes sense that an organization that represents merchants would prefer to keep their members mark-up high and competition quiet. From the looks of the Walmart in Guadalajara, I guess the word is out. No need to tell people where to find the best deal. They found it.. It is interesting how business is done in different places..

This is typical of Mexican merchants ina country where competition is not real. rices are kept artificially high by price gougers. Example: Computers from the USA are duty free. When Compaq brings computers into Mexico they do not pay any duties! Somewhere in the food chain the IVA is applied. The only additional costs are brokerage fees and shipping. BUT Compaq (or any other brand) computers can cost 40 to 60 % more in Mexico. WHY? this also applies to other peripherals like printers. One Lexmark unit is exactly double the price @ Costco Mexico as compared to Costco USA. Can you spell GOUGE!
