While it is probably too early to brag about this, my signal strength here on the west coast of MX has typically been in the mid-20s range ... marginal, but reliable.

For the past week or so, it has (daytime at least) been in the mid 30's! Can't wait for May 27th to come and go.

The date you need to worry about is June 16. That is the date that the FEC will be complete. The decrease in error correction will cause boxes with marginal signal lock to no longer lock.

June 21 - We fared better here in Baja California Sur as well. Here are some readings from a couple of clients a few weeks ago. I'll update soon since I think TP 7 switched on as well:

Looks like Cancun, Merida and Cozumel in the Yucatan Peninsula were hit hard by the switch. Here are the readings for a 1.2 meter dish from June 18th, sent to us by one of our clients in Cozumel.

Thanks for the detailed report. I missed the switchover as I am still up North for another few weeks. I look forward to getting back to Lake Chapala and to start figuring out which dish to point where. I'm figuring that the 2.4 will point toward 129, the 1.4 toward 110 and the 1.8 toward 119. Then of course I still have the old close meshed C/ almost Ku band 12 foot dish that I can play around with. I guess I will use the 2.4 meter to play around with Nimiq 5 at 72.7 degrees West

I use my little 75 E for my hometown programming. Yes my back yard looks like an antenna farm, but it's a fun hobby.

I too want to say thanks, Alan; also thanks for your numerous posts on the satellite guys US forum. If any of you are interested, be prepared to be overwhelmed with technical info. Here is the URL.

Alan - Really interesting to see the signal strengths. We're a bit down the coast from you with a 1.2 meter dish and have seen changes since the transition ... some for the better ... some for the worse. The most significant loss is Tr 19 (CNN) which we can no longer watch ... signal strength is 7!

Other loss is Tr 7 with a reading of 9. Sorry to lose Animal Planet, History, etc., but haven't spent much time recently watching MTV2!

If you can pop for it, I would go for a 6' to 8' dish to nudge those wimpy transponders back into usable range.

First post - glad I found this fourm. Just back to Mexico - Mahahual in southern QRoo. Was not aware of the pending changes for 119. Figured that Depression Alex moved the 2.4m off station. So got the trusty BIRDOG out to re-aim. No luck. Figured the palms tree had grown -so climbed up an topped it with a chain saw.

After that starting checking the internet and found out what happened. Needless to say we are out of TV and looking for an alternate.

I went to ShawDirect, it works great, better than Dish ever did. If you like hockey, it's the only way to go, but I didn't lose much and except for the strongest downpours, it works fine, their remote is a bit funky, but I'll adapt.

Shaw Direct also works great in northern Yucatan. Do you connect to only Anik F1R 107.3W or are you also receive Anik F2 111.1W programming? One dish or 2?

Just one dish and it says "satellite name A4" so, not really sure. The dish was on the casita, so the lady who rents during the winter brought down a low end receiver, when Dish crashed I brought it to the main house. I'm going to have her bring down another receiver for the casita this Fall and will buy a dish from the guys in Guad.

Last weekend it rain gently most of the time it seemed and I never lost the sat, sometimes I'd lose Dish with heavy clouds, and I know dish was aligned because I checked it with a meter.

I understand that the "satellite name A4" message means that your receiver is successfully locked onto at least one of the 2
Anik satellites. Shaw's core SD programming lives on 107.3W, and 111.1W seems to have the bulk of their HD programming.

I don't have an HD receiver, so probably the one at 107. I was thinking about bringing down a HD receiver, but when I looked at the cost/benefit it didn't make sense, there is little I watch that isn't just fine in normal mode. And as I read about some of the apparent problems with some HD receivers, I figured sticking with the little 207 & 209's was just fine.

In my old life I had a media room I specifically designed for sound and had all the bells & whistles, I took the pics off the walls, my clothes out of the closet and sold the mansion "as is" - so, those days are past. In fact, I just down scaled to a little Dell Zino for most of my activities and picked up an eMachines netbook for travel. Although, I didn't exactly think through the netbook thing, it was a heck of a deal at WalMart, I forgot to consider it only spoke Spanish - duh, sometimes I forget where I live. Fortunately I had an unused upgrade to Vista (sigh) and it worked and got me back to Ingles with a bit of tinkering.

Steve Steve Steve :) First thanks for the weather station. Now I want to bitch at you my friend, say I with a smile. Unless your screen is real small you are going to want to watch HD. Up north, for example, I have a 33 inch TV with a digital tuner. And I can choose channels over the air, in either standard definition or HD.

To me, at least, HD is so much better even on a small 33 inch screen TV that I would never consider SD. (a While back the 42 inch was average for flat screen, I have no idea what it is now)

Get the 505 receiver and point at 107.3 and 111.1 for HD and other wierd languages. These are Shaw Direct satellites, not DISH.

Oops. I'm violating the forum rules and talking about another topic. Soon I will try to get my DISH system up and running. But I'm not in a hurry. I just got to get back to Mexico, and I'm trying to catch up on other things to include next weeks Reporter article which is on Star Choice.

Well anyway with digital cable from Guadalajara and Star Choice which gives my the US networks, I get most of what I want. and if I really wanted to, I could reactivate my digital C band system.

Crocs, any signal at all on any transponders?

On your remote control, go to MENU > 6 > 1 > 1.
Using the blue ARROW keys on the remote to maneuver, change the SATELLITE to 119.
Then scroll through the TRANSPONDERs, one at a time. Wait five to ten seconds each time to change transponders so the receiver has time to lock on to the signal.

Although it may be small consolation, you should be able to swing around to the 110° (somewhere near 56.4° El and 232 Az in Mahahual) and pick up something with a 2.4m (be sure to rerun the Switch Check)

Thanks to everyone who has contributed: great forum post and critical for many of us.

For the record, in Akumal (between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, 100km South of Cancun):

With our large (2.7M) dish, we were getting 119 signal strength in the 80-95 range before the change.

With the loss of signal, we checked the dish alignment for any possible "tweaks", and then measured the transponders with a DP311 connected directly to the LNB:

Transponder: Signal strength
1-5: 0
6: 35
7: 20
8: 9
9: 0
10: 30
11: 28
12: 18
13: 0
14: 31
15: 37
16: 16
17: 0
18: 40
19: 37
20: 17
21: 11

One very strange phenomenon, for some transponders, the strength meter will first show a reasonable number (18 to 39) and then jump to zero. No idea what is causing this,

No PDRs Until now we have been running with two PDRs (DVR625) and a bunch of straight receivers (DP311). We had only a single line from the switches to the televisions so we used a DP44 switch with Separators (123254) connected to the two 635s. We also use a DP34 in series behind the DP44 for the balance of the receivers. This setup has been great for several years.

With the new satellite, the "check switch" function could no longer recognize the DP44 switch with the PDRs. We went so far as to connect a cable directly from the LNB to a DVR625 and the "check switch" still failed to find any signal so apparently there is some signal that is required by the 625 that we no longer get.

Unless someone knows better, I guess that we are stuck with only DP311 receivers and no recording.

Local Channels : We no longer can receive the Miami "spot" so we no longer get the earlier local channels. We will probably switch to New York.

We will probably eventually switch to ShawDirect.
