WOW

I had seen pictures of the bridge, but these pictures of the bridge being built are breathtaking.

What Rolly said.

Those are amazing, and I feel more than a little sick to my stomach. (I have a pronounced fear of heights....particularly regarding driving a car over a cliff.)

Great photos and a very interesting bridge, however after viewing and crossing one of the bridges on Presa Infiernillo south of Uruapan, Michoacan a few years ago, where the entire bridge was leaning 5° off kilter, I am very skeptical of Mexican bridge building abilities.

Looks like fun... you go first.

It'll be a testament to Mexican bridge building only if it holds up. That sounds like one complex and expensive highway. Hard to imagine they couldn't find an easier route overall.

Yes, it is an amazing project.
The bad news is that Rick and I will have to rewrite a section of our Geo-Mexico book! (We used the Durango-Mazatlán route as a classic example of how terrain affects travel times) - see http://geo-mexico.com/?p=721

That's bad news? Sounds like a good reason for a new edition and to sell new copies. Use the old route versus the new one for a perfect side by side illustration.

True enough (we hope!). The 'bad news" was a selfish reaction since it took me a good half a day to research and draw the map we use, and that's now "toast" when we revise the book shortly. But the bridge is great news for those that like heights and want faster travel times between Durango and Mazatlán. It may take a couple more years to complete the highway, though, apparently.

Hopefully by then things will have settled down and we won't have cartel gangs setting up checkpoints and throwing people over.

There has been a tragic accident at the bridge construction site, courtesy of very strong winds. This article contains photos of the damage, and it's quite scary to think that wind could do this. One young man (25) died and a few others injured. The workers are quite concerned.

Really? Well after hurricane Katrina I'm also highly skeptical of the US ability to build levies or to properly coordinate disaster relief!

You're obviously not familiar with Mexico's geography. Pick up a map.

Neither are U.S. construction projects, though you feel obliged to comment on them.
