In 2012, Canada will begin issuing electronic passports, or ePassports, to all its citizens.

At the same time, Passport Canada will start offering the option of a 10-year validity period as well as a 5-year validity period.

Under the User Fees Act, federal government departments must consult Canadians before changing their services or fees. So before it launches the new and improved passport, Passport Canada invites you to take part in its online consultations on service improvements.

Share your ideas with us for improving our services by filling out a quick and easy online questionnaire by May 7, 2010.

Thanks for that information. The questions only take a couple of minutes to complete. I would like to see the marriage of both a national drivers licence and passport. Also to provide us with a small (drivers licence size") copy for ourselves. It's nice to have some input on this matter.

I too would like to see a smaller passport type card. But at least there is the option of obtaining a citizenship card that you can carry in your wallet. Click here

In addition I would like to see a change in the Guarantor requirements for Canadian passports issued in Mexico to mirror the requirements for Canadian residents of the US and Bermuda. (I am not holding my breath)

Filliable PDF forms for passport applications from Mexico would be nice too.

"I would like to see the marriage of both a national drivers licence and passport."

Hmmm. I would like that too. It might be a problem in terms of non-resident status for tax purposes. One of the "ties" that the government uses in order to be able to tax you even while you are abroad is a valid Canadian driver's license. They can use that "tie" as enough justification to require you to pay or at least file Canadian taxes.

I have a friend working in Hong Kong whose only tie to Canada was her passport and driver's license. She was paying Hong Kong taxes only (10%) because she figured she had done enough to cut her ties to Canada and, therefore, deserved non-resident status for tax purposes. She was wrong. The Canadian Mafia backtaxed her on the basis of her maintaining a Canadian driver's license.

Hi Zorba,

I see your point . . . hadn't thought of that. I have been in the states for so many years that when I came I wasn't even old enough to drive. I have always maintained my Canadian Citizenship and my American Permanent Residence Status. Did my military in the USA and have both a NOB drives Lic. and a Mex one. That ought to really confuse them!
