I don't know if those are the shrimp we've been enjoying all along, or if we've ever had them.

At any rate, we've been pleased with what we've eaten at our favorite local seafood restaurants.

Of course, this only applies to the USA. They are still available in México.

Also the ban takes place during the veda (ban) on shrimping, which usually occurs between a date in April and a date in October - so I don't see it as a serious loss.

Hopefully it will mean more turtles will survive to breed, but not to be eaten legally.............yet.

This delicious looking plate of shrimp looks like it is from La Guera in Patzcuaro. Is it the central location or new one on Morelia / Patzcuaro highway? Buen Provecho, David

Actually, the wild shrimp ban will almost certainly work in the favor of sea turtles for which we can be grateful but may also, paroxically, work to the benefit of those of us living in Mexico since we may see a repeat of the "Freedom Fries" tomato export fiasco that took place when the Bush administration forbad the importing of tomatoes into the U.S. from Mexico at the start of the Iraq war and some really great tomatoes grown commercially in the Sayula area destined only for the U.S. market were, instead, shipped to retailers in Jalisco and for a while there we were getting fine tomatoes that would have been normally shipped to the U.S. but, unfortunately, that is long over.

If Mexico´s shrimpers can´t export a certain portion of their shrimp harvest to the U.S. then they can sell them to us during the interim when they re redesigning their trawlers. Unfortunately, there is little hope they will send fresh, never frozen shrimp to most of us because that is not normally customary down here where most of the shrimp you buy at the market have been frozen and thawed and as one who grew up on the Gulf Coast of the U.S. on Mobile Bay with easy access to never frozen shrimp just off the day boat, I can assure you that there is no comparison between the excellent taste of fresh shrimp and frozen shrimp. As the Mexican shrimpers must continue to harvest shrimp to meet their bank debts, why not sell those fresh shrimp to us?

David Haun, I note that while the picture no longer shows up as an embedded image, clicking on the place holder icon reveals it in a new tab or window.

Yes, it was taken at Mariscos La Güera of Pátzcuaro, but I don't recall which one.

For an album of pictures of Mariscos La Güera and its fine seafood, go here:

Duuude. Tequila shrimp, shrimp a la diabla, tamarind shrimp. The sort of stuff you can only "really" make with fat, enormous, gloriously fresh specimens plucked right out of the water. God, I miss those, and the lobsters in Baja. Fresher or better seafood you could not ask for!
