Actually, the wild shrimp ban will almost certainly work in the favor of sea turtles for which we can be grateful but may also, paroxically, work to the benefit of those of us living in Mexico since we may see a repeat of the "Freedom Fries" tomato export fiasco that took place when the Bush administration forbad the importing of tomatoes into the U.S. from Mexico at the start of the Iraq war and some really great tomatoes grown commercially in the Sayula area destined only for the U.S. market were, instead, shipped to retailers in Jalisco and for a while there we were getting fine tomatoes that would have been normally shipped to the U.S. but, unfortunately, that is long over. If Mexico´s shrimpers can´t export a certain portion of their shrimp harvest to the U.S. then they can sell them to us during the interim when they re redesigning their trawlers. Unfortunately, there is little hope they will send fresh, never frozen shrimp to most of us because that is not normally customary down here where most of the shrimp you buy at the market have been frozen and thawed and as one who grew up on the Gulf Coast of the U.S. on Mobile Bay with easy access to never frozen shrimp just off the day boat, I can assure you that there is no comparison between the excellent taste of fresh shrimp and frozen shrimp. As the Mexican shrimpers must continue to harvest shrimp to meet their bank debts, why not sell those fresh shrimp to us?
