We are having our late March heat wave in San Cristóbal de Las Casas which means that daily temperatures are hovering near highs in the high 70s to low 80s Fahreheit in town and locals are freaked because they fear air borne-illnesses ´promoted by microbes brought to life by the "heat" and carried by the daily breeze and frankly there may be something to this as many among my acquaintances at my language school and about town have been laid up with stomach and respiratory illnesses including Dawg although Dawg´s distress is clearly attributable to having eaten tainted food in a disreputable hostel on the slopes of the Tacaná Volcano outside of Tapachula and a miserable experience that has been but Dawg is now at least partially back on his feet and must admit that these warm and stunningly clear days are to his liking and this splendid weather is vindication for his having bought a second home in this high mountain valley subject to the vagaries of weather at 7,000 feet. This sickness has caused Dawg to lose the perception of the difference between the preterite and imperfect tenses in Spanish and has, consequently, resulted in much embarrassment in Spanish class as, prior to his having taken ill, he was a student of merit but, try as I may I cannot get my Spanish teacher to believe that my stumbling upon technicalities is due to digestive distress and consequent sleeplessness but I will persevere even though my teacher today related the tale to me of extranjeros who moved to a ranch in Ocosingo and contracted trichinosis from having eaten tainted pork or, even worse, perhaps tainted strawberries and having subsequently been inflicted by unspeakable spasms and then dying unpleasant deaths just from having been hereabouts and having ingested seemingly innocuous comestibles but I must not dwell on the fates of others and even if the pigs or strawberries get me I will still have reached age 68 through no fault of my own and despite repeated attempts to accelerate the process over the years praise the lord.
