Mexico's second richest man calls for legalization of drugs

The owner of TV Azteca is trying to exert his influence upon the Mexican government to admit that the war on drugs is being lost. The use of the military to combat the narcos has had huge social consequences with no end in sight. He has tried to convince both Presidents Fox and Calderon to hit the narcos where it hurts..in their pocketbooks by legalizing cocaine and other drugs, thus taking the profit out of the illegal traffic. Both have rejected the notion for fear of alienating the United States government. He asks the question: "If guns can be legal in the US, then why can't drugs be legal in Mexico". He makes a good point IMHO.

Until drugs are legal in both Mexico and the U.S., the bloodbaths will continue. Legalizing them in Mexico wouldn't begin to solve the problem, which is the profitability of selling to U.S. customers. You know.......follow the money, as per usual.

It would be great for tourism. Alcohol prohibition gave Tijuana a good economic boost. It would be nice to see the border cities become hotspots for nightclubs and entertainment instead of war zones. Stoned potheads are a lot easier to control than inebriated drunks. Cocaine could be a problem but marijuana is easy enough. Mexico should take advantage of narco-tourism.

Im completely in favor of legalizing all drugs. If the US wants to solve its economic, social, healthcare, crime problems all they have to do is regulate and tax the drug industry.

It seems that perhaps the D.F. is being used as a testing ground recently for some forward thinking measures in Mexico. Perhaps, they could try it there first.

All that's fine, but can't see where legalizing cocaine -- which is neither grown nor processed in Mexico, nor for which there is much of a market -- would affect much of anything. The violence has been over control of export points, and I don't see the countries to which it's being exported in any hurry to legalize its import.

Meth is a big problem in TJ and there are even lots of Mexican tweakers there now. It's very cheap; small bags (called globos) can be bought for only 50 pesos. That is very sad.

Meth is a problem anywhere it exists and is truly a dangerous drug. It is cheap, easy to produce, easily concealed and with similar properties has been replacing cocaine in popularity. The US military has sometimes given it to its combat troops and has gotten another boost in popularity from military use in the middle east.

Although it has some legitimate uses it is very easily abused. Users will often continue use around the clock and stay awake for several days developing very erratic behavior as they enter a sleepwalking state in an irrational dream-quality world. They will often sleep full days around the clock when coming off the drug after several days. Long-term use takes a very heavy toll on the body.

Very dangerous stuff indeed, and dangerous for the people around them. Though I favor legalization of marijuana and dislike prohibition in general bacause of the market and environment it breeds, it is because of methamphetamine abuse I do not favor all-out legalization of all substances.

I completely agree with you, Peter.

Meth abuse is very severe in my area of Portland, called "Felony Flats". I try to help meth addicts but most do not truly want to quit meth. If I lived in TJ I would try to start up a group of CMA (Crystal Meth Anonymous), cuz there aren't any of those meetings yet in TJ. I care about a lot of ppl involved in that sad problem. Also, my dad was a heroin addict and died around age 60. :( I could not help my own father and I am sure that is why I have always cared about addicts and their families and want to help them.
