I have had no problems taking prepared food items in either direction, that is usually flying and with thorough inspections at the airports. I assume you're driving so a less stringent inspection would be expected.

If you're travelling with your dog(s) I don't see a difficulty, but if not, three 50lb bags of dog food they might try to say is for resale, especially that small quantities of dog food is weighed and sold from large bags in the tiendas here.

Really, I don't have a dog so have not tried but that is the only problem I see.

I'm sure we had dry dog food in the car when we smuggled our monkey in, so I don't think you should worry about it. Unless your dog picks a fight with the border folks, I can't imagine they'd make an issue of it.

(Might want to start thinking about gradually weening him/her off the the specialty stuff though....and mixing in whatever your in-Mexico solution will be.)

In my experience, everybody with a dog in the car gets a free pass/greenlight at the border.

Well, it happened to us once, anyway.

Maybe the spices are not such a good idea...... This from AP

Man held in Mexico after spices mistaken for drugs...

SAN DIEGO — A Nigerian-born U.S. citizen spent two days in a Tijuana jail after Mexican authorities mistook the soup spices he was bringing to his nephew in Mexico for an illegal drug.
San Diego social worker Okoronkwo Umeham (oh-koh-RUHN'-kwoh oo-MAY'-ham) said Tuesday that he was detained while crossing the border on March 15 because inspectors thought he had five bags of khat, a stimulant popular in East Africa.
Umeham says he was bringing ingredients for ugu (oo-goo), a spicy Nigerian soup, to his nephew who lives in Tijuana.
He says he didn't speak Spanish and couldn't explain that the labeled packages were dried fish, spices and vegetables, not drugs.
Federal prosecutors in Tijuana say they had to test the substances.

Yes. Last December 21st or 22nd, I can't recall the exact date, I brought a cargo trailer across with my two Labs and one cat in the back of the Tahoe. in the trailer I had two 40 lb bags and one opened bag of dry dog food as well as one large bag of dry cat food. they didn't even look at it. I think the suggestion that your Consulate there in Toronto Canada "suggested I have a letter from my vet saying my dog is on a special diet and see if they accept it." is not a bad idea. Especially if it is on a "script", like a normal medication from a vet. It never hurts to have a plan "B". Most of them don't read English, but a backup never hurts. You can always find one who reads English or a Mexican national (waiting like you) who can and will translate for you.

Also please do not forget to bring any medications for your pets with you. Especially flea and tick med's, as well as any other prescribed medications. A ninety day supply is a good thing. I had a lot of trouble getting a medication for a thyroid problem one of my dogs has. I never could find it even going through the Vet schools in three states. That medication is very cheap i the USA but not available here at any price. Now I get her med's at the same time when I go to my appointments at the VA in the States.
