Lost vehicle importation permit

Can't Post | Private Reply
I can't find my vehicle importation permit to save my life. I placed the sticker on the windshield myself and put the other part with the receipt in my glove box. I went to get it last night to make a copy, but it wasn't there. I can't be the only one this has happened to, so I'm wondering if any of you folks know what I can do to get a duplicate. Posted this on another forum, but no one knew what to do for sure. Best answer was to take the car NOB and turn in the sticker, then get a new one. That's a long drive though. Eventually I gotta do it. Thanks

I have never been asked for the permit papers, except at the border. When you return to border, pick an easy crossing, like Colombia, west of N. Laredo. They seem very nice there. Buen viaje, David

You might want to clarify your question a bit. Are you leaving or staying?

If you're staying, which was my first take on it, there must be a way to get a duplicate original without driving to the border and starting from "go".

(Unless there isn't.)

I'd start with the agency that issues temporary vehicle importation permits....Aduana (?). Seems to me they're the only office that could fix you. I just went all the way upstairs - you're welcome - to look at mine, and I'm guessing the most important information is the VIN #.

Good luck.

The only thing I can say to be of any reassurance is that mine was also temporarily lost when I went to look for it to make copies. It turned up later, I had put it in a "safe"spot. Never needed it for anything, been asked for all kinds of papers but never that. It stays good as long as your visa is good and that is all I've ever been asked to show to prove the vehicle is valid.

This lost permit thing's still on my mind. Today I found the following on this site (Mexconnect):

When vehicle importation documentation is lost or stolen, replacement documents can be issued by regional Mexican customs offices to the importer after (s)he obtains a certified document from the U.S. Embassy or one of its consulates attesting to the loss.

Maybe I should hire someone who deals with immigration and customs to do the leg work for me. My neighbors just had someone assist them in obtaining their FM3s -- someone like that. Or, perhaps I should go hat in hand to Aduana (I speak Spanish) and resolve this myself. Is there an office at Lakeside, or do I have to go to GDL? Where's Rolly when you need him? JK Rolly.

I think the nearest Aduana office is at the Guadalajara Airport.

Casa -- Thanks a MILLION!!! Problem almost solved. I called Infosat and spoke to a super nice and helpful young lady who explained the procedure to obtain a certified copy of the vehicle importation permit by mail. She gave me all the information. I said problem almost solved because of two slight issues. First, I called from a VoIP phone and it's hard to understand because of a limited connection due to slow down and upload speeds. Second, I speak great Spanish, but this chick was talking at a hundred miles per hour. Those two things cause a lack of confidence in the info obtained. We all know about the Mexican Postal Service. I'll be lucky if the request gets to the right place with the exact info. A misplaced number or letter and I'm toast. So, I'm going to have my Mexican girlfriend, who's in the States, call back tomorrow and get me the info again. BTW, it only costs $14 pesos, but takes a month to process and you can't cancel the permit at the border without the sticker and permit, or a certified copy. Thanks again Casa. Mexico Mike charges $25 USD for this info.

Glad I could help.

I went to The Aduanas office at the GDL airport years ago regarding my car permit. About 2 months later I received a letter in the mail from the customs main office in Mexico City. So you may be surprised…

Good Luck

After several phone calls and emails to INFOSAT and Banjercito, it's now clear that the following, which was posted by Casa, is the solution for a lost vehicle importation permit:

Original del permiso de importación o internación temporal de vehículos con su respectivo holograma, en caso de no contar con el permiso y/o holograma por robo, pérdida o destrucción, deberán anexar el acta levantada por el Ministerio Público.

One need only report the theft, lost or destruction of a permit to the Ministerio Publico. With a copy of the report, it is legal to keep the vehicle in Mexico for the duration of the permit and to have it canceled at the border upon exiting Mexico. Thanks again Casa.
