Wallet sized FM2 visa ??

I am in the process of replacing my FM2 inmigrado visa which was lost. The Immigration office here in Tijuana has told me that I can get a wallet sized version of my FM2, but I have to go to the offices of Immigration in Mexico City. Has anyone out there in cyberland done this?

How would this help? I think you would still need all the pages for refrendos and travel outside Mexico, wouldn't you?

More of a convenience, than anything else, size wise. Prorrogas and "refrendos" are for renewals of FM3s and FM2s, once inmigrado status is obtained, that process is no longer. This new wallet size FM2 would be similar to the new Passport card issued in the USA that is wallet sized for travel throughout North America and Caribe. It just is much easier to have on your person at all times rather than the passport style book.

If I travel outside of North America, I use my US Passport (not the US Passport card).

Anyone with FM2 inmigrado status have this credential?

I'm up for renewal out of Cancun and will check into it. I carry a photo copy of my titutal pages now as it is, so I don't really see and advantage. You need the booklet to leave and re enter the country. Number of days out is limited, so they do have to keep track...

I went to pick up my renewed FM2 this morning (La Paz, BCS) and asked about the wallet cards. At present, they are available only in Mexico City, and only for folks with inmigrado status. Nice idea, though. It doesn't take long for the booklets to get raggy, even with infrequent use.

Thanks Kate, that pretty much confirms what I was told here in TJ. I do have the inmigrado status. I sent an email to the DF office of UNAMI asking what I need to do to get the wallet sized credential....I won't hold my breath, but I will let you know if I get a response. Thanks, Ray

Thanks Wynco, for reminding me about this...I got my FM2 inmigrado book replaced, but received no answer from INM via email regarding the wallet sized credential, so I started to investigate to answer our questions. Today I received an email from the " JEFE DEL DEPTO. DE INFORMACIÓN Y REGISTRO NACIONAL DE EXTRANJEROS", quite a title, he is in the Mexico City office.

Reminder: This is only for FM-2 holders, the wallet sized credential ("fotocredencial") is presently only available in el DF, but starting in June 2010, you will be able to get it in all INM offices throughout Mexico. He also stated that all FM2 holders will have to replace their booklet visa for this new fotocredencial ID.

Here is his response and contact info...again, pertains to FM2 holders only:

Buenos días.

Actualmente la fotocredencial únicamente se expide en la ciudad de México, sin embargo en el mes de junio, será posible tramitarla en cualquier delegación del INM en el país.

Cabe hacer mención que todas las libretas FM-2 de inmigrado, deberán canjearse por la fotocredencial antes del mes de noviembre del presente año.

Cualquier duda estoy a sus órdenes.

You think? Good thing I joined this forum, I wouldn’t have had any idea about this otherwise. I wonder how many inmigrados will find out, and what happens if one doesn’t change.

This wallet sized card has been available for quite a few years for FM2-immigrado status. I have a friend here in Ajijic who has had one for 5 or 6 years. He did have to go to DF to obtain the card and has not had to use his official FM2 book when traveling to or from Mexico. The card is swiped - I've been putting off going to DF since I still have pages left in my book. If you do enough traveling you do have to apply for a new booklet, even though you are immigrado - it's your ID. But it would be great to obtain the card in Guad rather than a trip south...
