The Soconusco Coast. Funky Towns, Splendid Beaches, Treasured Isolation

The first beach town of merit south of Oaxaca's Isthmus of Tehuantepec, itself a fine and isolated Pacific Coast region, is the funky beach community of Puerto Arista 20 kilometers from the old town of Tonala' just southeast of Arriaga, Chiapas. There is nothing to be said for Puerto Arista except that it resides on a seemingless endless and wide and beautiful Pacific beach and has resolved to exclude high-rise condo development and, instead, consists of kilometers of low-rise funky beach cottages with abundant palapas and a few hotels of little note. A fine place to walk your dogs and enjoy this fine beach town now much closer to urban zones such as the state capital at Tuxtla Gutierrez now that a new autopista has opened up and provided decent access to Tuxtla and the Chiapas Highlands.

One can drive south of Puerto Arista along the lengthy Soconusco Coast all the way to Guatemala over the autopista from Arriaga to the Guatemala border in about three hours or less and this inland highway provides many primitive access roads to isolated and undeveloped areas with magnificent beaches and undiscovered lagoons and on the other side of this autopista are ecological reserves and rain forests of extraordinary beauty.

A fine place.
