For the last 3 years I have been using Hughesnet as our ISP( satellite). Now we have Telmex Infinitum. Much faster especially on the download. However I began to notice that there are many you tube videos I cannot watch as well as many short news clips on NBC. I am sure there are other sites that block foreign IP addresses. I tried a few Proxy programs and some VPN software. Some would not load as I think Telmex blocks these. Others were not free and I dont want to pay unless I am sure they work. Some were bad software that would not start. Is there anyone else who has had this problem and found a good service? Thanks

I struggled through that maze a while back. I never did come up with one that really allowed me to watch restricted videos from the USA. Often the video source would tell me: We know you're using a proxy service and we ain't gonna show you nothin'.

Thanks Rolly:

I thought it might be fruitless as I spent over 3 hours trying various methods. I really wanted to see some Olympic videos but NBC had them blocked!!

I had experiences similar to Rollys', I found a couple of proxy servers that would work sometimes, but not always.

I did find one TV station on an online site for US TV that showed the opening ceremonies late one night. I'm not sure, but I think that station was in Canada. They never did show any more Olympic events.

We get several TV stations from México City here on Cablemas, but none of them showed anything from the Olympics. That was a surprise, and disappointing.

I finally found an online site that shows some Mexican stations that had some of the Olympic events on it some days, all in Spanish of course. It was skimpy, but good visually if you knew some of the rules of hockey, etc. but the narrators were speaking too fast to understand much of what they were saying.

The winter Olympics seemed to be a non-event in most of México.

It used to be so easy to get feeds from the states and Canada. But more and more programs are being blocked. I was hoping that someone would tell us that there was some new way to do it.

Yes I get tons of TV and Radio stations from Star Choice, now Shaw Direct and radio feeds from XM radio.. But no, sadly, I can't get all of the stations I want.

You need a VPN (virtual private network). One that will give you a USA IP address. I already posted here about Protexx SITH, a while back. It will give you a Dallas based IP address. Try searching for my post on Protexx SITH in the Technical branch. It costs US$49/year. There are many VPN's to choose from. If the only functionality you need is change of IP for video, then ANY should work. Just make sure you are not buying into a slow one. I have already tested Protexx with Infinitum, and the speed is good.

On the other hand, the best VPN that money can buy is Xerobank, and it is expensive, but offers very very high anonymity, but that is not what you need. You only need the IP address change, which Protexx covers at a reasonable price.

If you google Protexx SITH, get the phone number and call them, they will give you 30 days for free to try it, atleast that was the policy in the past.

Johnv:

Thank you. I will contact them. I wanted to see the video of Neil Young at the closing ceremonies and every way I tried did not work. I think Telmex may have a block on some of the "hide me "sites.

It's a perpetual battle and you just have to decide if you want to do it. Both your ISP and many content websites want to block proxy servers because they want to control the distribution of the content (e.g. a site may only have license to distribute it within a certain region) and track users. But they can only block the proxy servers that they know about. So be prepared to constantly seek out new proxy servers because the one that works for you today may be discovered and blocked tomorrow. There is probably a proxy distribution list that providers use to share known proxies.

I wondered about trying Slingbox, but that would require having the equipment at someones house. Presumably a friend or relative. Anyone used Slingbox?

As it happens. I worked at BestBuy in Laredo last month for WD, Slingbox and LG TV. Slingbox does work anywhere in the world with no restrictions. I would view my tv in Nuevo Laredo on the company provided iPhone in Laredo. Vice versa would work as well.
One example I used was this. If you have a cable/sat box hooked up to a slingbox (TV not needed in the hookup) in the US. One would have complete control of the cable/sat box from Mexico. Generally an extra cable sat/box is about $10 a month. This would be on whatever package the person has where the cable/sat box is.

On another note. VPN is the way to go for viewing Netflix, hulu, etc. Proxy servers are bad news as they typically do not work and worse...some of them snoop for information such and bank passwords, etc. I use strongvpn and it works great. In addition to that you can either buy a DD-WRT enabled router or flash your firmware on listed model numbers wireless routers to enable vpn from the router. This way all of your traffic to and from your house is US IP traffic in the sense that there are no more blocked websites. If your router is DD-WRT enabled and you have one of the new GoogleTV, or Internet enabled TV's you can view whatever service is for US locations only.

Hope this helps someone. Let me know if it does.

Great input. I/we appreciate your comments. However, here is one problem. If you already have a source of TV programming here in Mexico, no problem. But should you want to use Sling Box for all of your programming. It could be a big problem.

I pay Comcast about $45 US for my internet connection and more for my TV programming whether I am in Mexico or in the US.

If I were to get all of my TV programming from the US via slingbox, I would have a major problem. Why? Because I would use more than 250 gigabytes of bandwidth per month, and I would have to pay Comcast, not about $45 US per month but $99 US per month for so much bandwidth.

Right now, I'm not paying Comcast anything because I get one period per year up to 6 months when I can be on vacation.

Also remember that the bandwidth here in Mexico sucks. Are speeds are so slow compared to the US and other countries that are much faster, that should we try to download HDTV or often even old fashioned standard definition, we/you're are going to have problems

Good luck

Bandwith caps... I did forget about those on both ends. That would be because I do not experience that on my end (Mexico). That being said I have 5 meg service on a cable company here in Neuvo Laredo (no caps on usage). Yeh sure I deal with the same shared bandwidth problems as everyone else on a cable modem.

Usage on the US/Canada/ or other... well that would be the rub. However, if the cable/sat box is a DVR then one could watch the shows that are more important to watch for entertainment needs. I have to watch that series sort of thing to sooth my soul for living away from great entertainment because novelas just ain't cutting it. Yep, that sort of decision making. To each his own. Just another possible option.

Back to figuring out if I can set this up with a friend and or family in the U.S.A.
