Yes, just about every supermarket sells tortillas in Alaska, machine made of course. In the 1970s the grocery stores up there were pretty grim and prices for most things were sky-high.. They improved a lot in the 1980s and prices are comparable to prices in the smaller states now.

When we moved down to Anchorage, we found quite a large number of Mexicans there, most of them illegal. We had a friend there that owned a Mexican restaurant, he told me how hard it was to find the ingredients to prepare genuine Mexican food.

We also had a legal friend from Guadalajara that used to make delicious wheat tortillas. She would sometimes bring me some of them. Wow! They reminded me of the ones my Aunt Lu used to make when I was a kid.

Boy, that's a blast from the past. (Originally from Ventura.)

Now. Why did I have to go read esperanza's fabulous blog entry on Burritos? May have to head toward Burritos Moyahua this afternoon...

I came late to this fascinating discussion. But I'm puzzled as to why the Subject Line changes from Chili, etc, to New immigration manual?

The subject line changes because this is a detached thread. The original immigration thread got hijacked, so this is the spin-off.

Anónimo, because the immigration manual thread wound its way into the kitchen in a discussion about flour tortillas, wheat production in Mexico, and the origin of various comestibles, I detached and moved all the kitchen-related posts from the old immigration manual thread into a NEW thread over here in this forum.

Because it is a whole lot of repetitious work to change the title of the thread in every one of so many posts, I only changed the first title, leaving the rest titled "New Immigration Manual". I understand that it's confusing, but I don't have the time or energy to change it all.
