Driving to Merida with pets

I would love to hear from folks who've driven into Mexico with pets. We are moving in September and plan to drive from Houston to Merida with two cats and a dog. Is this insane? Would it be better to fly?

You can bring your friends. The only problem is with hotels -- they usually don't like your pets, but motels are usually OK with them. If you are not aware of the difference between hotels and motels in México (it's different from in the States), I suggest you read this: http://rollybrook.com/motels.htm

We drove down from Vancouver with two dogs. Though we did not have any problems with the dogs, there was a couple of times when they had to sleep in the truck. Use the search function of this web site to check out "love motels". They might be an answer to your over night stays with pets. If we were aware of them when we drove down we would have probably used them.

Make sure you have kennels with you, many hotels will accept them if you have cages . The kennels really help in the negociations. We do not usually stay in larger towns or find a vet that will take them if we are in a larger town.
Check gringodog.com, there is a list of hotels who accept dogs. On the way down to Chiapas from Guadalajara, we usually stay in Fortin de las Flores in a B&B that accept dogs but this year it was booked up and we stay in Orizaba ( la Cascada or las Cascadas)in a hotel that refused the dogs before and accepted them this time. You never know until you ask. When this hotel is busy they do not accept pets when it is half empty they do so nothing is consistent but you can usually find a place.
Plan on stopping early especially in hot places and start looking around 3PM. It gives time to find a place and relax during the hot time of the day.
If you cannot find anything youcan always stay in a no tell motel on the outskirts of towns. We never had to do that but we would if we could not find a place to our liking.
Coming down from California we had 3 cats and 3 mastiffs so you are not the only insane person around. People understand you are moving and will help you.

Thanks. that really helps. I can see we will need to drive and I'll just plan ahead as best as possible.

Dog's advice about stopping and finding a place in the mid-afternoon is very good. Allowing yourself time to relax, get some dinner and maybe explore a little bit will make the trip much more enjoyable. I wish we had taken more time on our drive down. There are some place we will probably never get back to and we regret that we didn't take the time to explore a little more.
