Anyone familiar with San Cristóbal and its surroundings knows that it is not an environment that lends itself well to amateur photography. That is not meant as a criticism of our blogger friends in their favored pursuits but I would hate to see folks who have yet to visit here mislead by trivial imagery. The town, its high valley, understated colonial architecture and varied and colorful cultures are feasts for the senses, not good subjects for random still photography. If that´s what you are looking for try San Miguel d'Allende. To the camera, San Miguel is Julia Roberts and San Cristóbal is Ma Kettle.

Well, gee, I think the average viewer looking at that couple's photos would think that San Cristobal is a very beautiful, interesting place. I sent that to a number of family and friends and got favorable comments from some very surprised people. One lady who is only familiar with border cities was absolutely stunned by them, had a lot of questions, changed her perspective about Mexico. That's important to me, as I've been working in Tyler, TX for about 15 months now. Ever since I told a few coworkers that I planned to retire in Mexico I've found out just how racist this area of the country is. Both black and white people here feel very threatened by Mexicans, as the state's demographics are tilting towards an eventual Hispanic majority. Anything to change their views is a good thing in my opinion. I think colonial cities like San Miguel, Zacatecas, Guanajuato, and others would shock people who believe Mexicans are all dirt poor and uncultured or violent drug lords. And it must bother people who come up here from Mexico who are very proud of their country to constantly confront such ignorance. Sorry for the rant, just really irritated with the attitude I've been getting lately. You'd think I'd announced that I had decided to live in a horse stall on a pig farm from some of the comments.

I understand, Frito. As one who lives about half the year in San Cristóbal and the rest of the year at Lake Chapala, I understand where you are coming from. We´ve lived in Mexico for so long with only occasional visits to France and never to the U.S., perhaps we are no longer in touch with the jingoism and ignorance you have experienced in Tyler. Actually, after our six month stay down here in Chiapas, we are often surprised at the mind-boggling ignorance displayed by residents of Lake Chapala´s Lakeside when it comes to much of the rest of Mexico. You don´t have to visit Tyler to find American troglidytes - or Mexican troglodytes for that matter.

My whole point was that the pictures did not do San Cristóbal justice. Just my opinion as a resident here.

OK. Sorry, but I have to ask: Who are you and what have you done with the Dawg?

That was entirely too reasoned and sane a post in response to the tempting target of southern U.S. bigotry (a subject we know to be near and dear to the Dawg's heart) for this to be from the often cantankerous, somewhat irascible, but always insightful friend we have come to know and love.
