If you are U.S. citizen living in Leon you should call the consulate in Guadalajara at (333) 268-2173 or schedule an appointment on line at their web site. They schedule application interviews for passport renewals on normal business days, Monday through Friday from 8:00AM to 11:30AM and you must go there in person with a pre-set appointment time. A fine excuse to spend the previous night in Guadalajara. The consulate is located in a fun district near centro. Lots of great hotels nearby.

For U.S. citizens living elsewhere in Mexico, consult the web site listing consulates general in Mexico that offer passport issuance and renewal services. For instance, we are living in Chiapas at the moment and would deal with the Merida Consulate the process of which would entail driving over there - a long way but doable with a combined short hop over to the Caribbean at Puerto Morelos. I guess I´ve been retired in Mexico too long and, as Monte Python suggested in Life of Brian, "Always Look at The Bright Side of Life." If I lived in parts of Chihuahua state, my consulate could be in Ciudad Juarez or did they close that in a hail of bullets?

If you are not a U.S. citizen you´re on your own.

I would love to help you and we have stayed in a couple of nice places close to the consulate but I am at present in San Cristóbal de Las Casas and can´t remember the names of the hotels. My wife could help, perhaps, as she still has a memory but she is up in Mexico City gallivanting about town on the pretense that she must consult with the French embassy now that France has closed its Guadalajara consulate. If and when she returns to lowly Chiapas in a few days, I will ask her where we stayed.

I say, "if" (she returns) because, to steal from an old tune, "How you gonna keep em down on the hill after they´ve seen DF?"

I would think that it would be a heck of a lot easier and more enjoyable to go to San Miguel de Allende, unless of course you would enjoy something like Guadalajara. I renewed mine in SMA with no problems.

What no one has yet said is that many (if not most) of the popular tourist destinations in México have a U.S. Consular Agency. The U.S. Consular agent can renew your U.S. passport with no problem whatsoever (and it's usually much faster and cheaper than driving to one of the U.S. Consulates in México.

Maybe JohnV has a point. The consular offices are about the same distance from central Leon with San Miguel being about 25 miles closer (109 miles to San Miguel, 136 miles to Guadalajara). You´re lucky to have two choices. Maybe road conditions will be important to you. Beats me.

Unless you want to go to Guadalajara for some other reason, San Miguel is easier. The consular agent in San Miguel is a very nice guy and very helpful. You will also have to return to pick up your passport--so unless you like Guad, use San Miguel.

Listen to these guys and go to San Miguel, Pat. When I renewed my passport, the Guadalajara consulate renewed my passport at the Lake Chapala Society a short walk from my home in Ajijic on their monthly visit to serve the expat commuity in that town. There are times when it pays to live with a host of similar old goobers whether in Ajijic or San Miguel. God help me if I have a passport problem in Chiapas.
