This one even caught the attention of my youngest child, a 21 year old who of course feels immortal at that age. A real big WTF.

Calderon campaigned on a law and order platform and if there was ever a campaign promise that failed, this one did most spectacularly.

"Torreon, Coahuila .- The Attorney General of Coahuila and the Municipal Public Security Bureau confirmed the deaths of at least eight people and up to 40 wounded in attacks on bars in the city. "

These were also young people, in 2 bars that were close to each other.

It's on the same CIUDAD JUAREZ story links.

Are you saying it did not also happen in Torreon at approx' the same time? (some of the links say 10 dead 15 wounded)

http://www.canada.com/...anada.com+World+News)

"Almost at the same time but in Torreon, in the northern state of Coahuila, 10 people were killed when gunmen rolled up in a trio of Hummers and opened fire on a crowd inside a bar."

http://www.mercurynews.com/...orldnews/ci_14311494

"Elsewhere, gunmen killed 10 people and wounded 15 in a bar in Torreon, a city in the northern state of Coahuila."

This did not make the local newspaper. Not uncommon. The Zetas have been effective is suppressing much news of their activities.

FYI, it now turns out that at least one of the "students" was a police informer. Hopefully your son doesn't pal around with folks that might be police informers or attend parties that might attract police informers.

"Juarez Mayor Jose Reyes Ferriz said Monday that authorities had found no evidence to suggest that any of the young victims were connected in some way to criminal activity."

This incident is reminiscent of the slaying of the California school official in Gomez Palacio. The kneejerk reaction was to assume that at least one person in the crowd was connected in some way with the narcos. From all appearances, these were good kids whose mistake was watching an athletic event together. I am going to go out on a limb and say that I think that the sicarios screwed up big time. One reality of Calderon's war on the cartels is that they are suffering huge rates of attrition. Now instead of the feared killers dressed "con aspecto Sinaloense" you see a bunch of fat teenagers and middleaged bricklayers being hired to do the work that requires a degree of professionalism. Instead of precise kills, they are using the shotgun approach, spraying bullets all over hoping to hit their target. I think that they went to the wrong house.

Here is another chilling thought, however. There was a recent report that the DEA had advised the Mexican government that it had information that the cartels were going to implement a strategy of targetting civilians in order to foment unrest against Calderon's policies. It is something to keep in mind in trying to make sense of the senseless.

The Zetas, once the armed wing of the Gulf cartel, have increasingly branched out on their own and are seen by Mexican authorities as one of the country's most brutal crime groups, known for gruesome tactics such as beheading victims.

In addition to drug trafficking, authorities say, the Zetas are involved in extortion, kidnapping, producing pirated CDs and DVDs, sales of alcohol and migrant smuggling.

The gang has been locked in a bloody turf war in western Mexico with a gang known as La Familia, which on Monday posted banners around the state of Michoacan calling on Mexicans to join its fight against the Zetas.

The highway shootout was the latest outbreak of violence in Torreon, which is the center of a region known as the Laguna, a major milk producer.

On Tuesday, a written message surfaced on YouTube that referred to the Sunday slayings. It warned Torreon authorities and residents against having anything to do with the Zetas, including patronizing bars that it said the gang runs.
