Both are very subjective terms but one way you could describe the difference would be:

Paulina Rubio (or any other ex-Timberiche member) vs Banda Recodo (or Tigres del Norte, Banda Limon)

I just asked a Mexican neighbor and friend (and English student) for his definition of fresa and naco. He said that fresas, both male and female, are the spoiled offspring of wealthy families who are into the latest in fashion and pop culture trends. The famous juniors can be fresas too. On the other hand, nacos can come from wealthy families or from those of more modest means. They have the pretensions of the fresas but no taste when it comes to clothes and other accoutrements of the fresas.

Good explanations but I wouldn't say a fresa necessarily needs to be a child of the wealthy. There are plenty of middle class fresas. And then you have the wannabes.

Quite right, MD, but another tip-off to a fresa is some teen or 20ish Mexican who dresses "preppy" and scatters English words (usually very mispronounced) throughout their speech.

Usually mispronounced? Actually most of my kids friends dress well and speak excellent English. As do many of my nieces and nephews. And their pronunciation is equally excellent. Only a few are thought of as fresa.

But there is definitely a fresa accent in Spanish, el habla "fresa". My 6 yr old niece can mimic it very well when prodded.

No, no, no, MD, you misunderstood me. All the fresa You Tube stuff I've seen, those English words dropped into their Spanish conversation were what was mispronounced. Since I don't know any fresas, not even my kids' friends, I have no idea whether they mispronounce English when they are SPEAKING English or not.

In a nutshell, yes! Fresa brings to mind a snobby rich kid who looks down on people who don't wear Dolce and Gabbana (The Devil Wears Prada, anyone?), while naca makes me think of the Antonio Aguilar song about the girl who goes to the city to work as a maid and starts putting on airs - and American clothes.

The fresa accent many times stresses the next to last syllable of the last word in a sentence regardless if it is stressed normally. They also may linger slightly on that sylllable.

Vamos a ir a la PLAAA-ya!

Esa chica está bien NAAAA-ca.

And sometimes the last syllable:

Esa chi-CAAAA?

Here are 2 commercials that are all done in “Fresa Speak”. I think they are really funny. In addition to the play on words, (The product is strawberry fruit rolls from Marinela), the 2 professions are not well know for have a large amount of fresas working in them. LOL.
