Shootout in Quiroga and an incident in Morelia

This morning I got an email from a friend who lives near Quiroga, with this in it:

Quote
Ejecutan a mando policiaco en Quiroga, Michoacán

I checked Google News, where I subscribe to a feed on Morelia, and there was this disconcerting item:

Quote
Hallan a una persona descuartizada en Morelia | Milenio.com

Very ugly, indeed.

We have passed through Quiroga a number of times but have admittedly not spent much time exploring the town. I don't think I am being naive but I would not have guessed that that the "drug war" issue would have been a big deal there. Goes to show what I know!

It is distressing to get my eyes opened and come to the realization just how far reaching this overall issue is! Natually, it goes without saying that that element will chose to operate when they feel comfortable.

Very perceptive comments, Neil.
Many of us live in a pink cloud of well being until something happens to intrude into our comfortable illusion.

While I like to believe that expats won't be targeted, the methods of execution used by those people are chilling, and I wouldn't be happy to stumble on a garbage bag full of body parts while on a walk up the country lane by our house. (Or anywhere.)

That´s not something I´d like to find in an ice chest near the mercado. I didn´t see anything about these events on the television news Friday morning. Still, Quiroga is where I go to buy cheap household items and these events won´t change that. I´m certainly not going to dress up and play cops and robbers but I´m also not packing up and moving back around Los Angeles, California either. Nor am I going to barricade myself inside the house and refuse to go out.

One danger to innocent bystanders is that the killers often fire off hundreds of rounds to get their victim--and sometimes they do this while in a speeding vehicle. They are not sharpshooters--they just fill the air with bullets. This can and has happened in every sized village-town-city-rancho-pueblo-etc. I read that the narcos have at least 400,000 people on the "payroll"--so they are everywhere.

Yesterday afternoon at about 2.30PM, on the highway between Zinapécuaro (about an hour east of Morelia) and Maravatío (near the border with Edomex), 'they' (whoever 'they' might be) ambushed a convoy of federal police officers. Five federal officers were killed and seven more were seriously injured. These latest killings were in addition to the six decapitated bodies found in Apatzingán on Friday, the head found in Quiroga's main plaza on Thursday, the assassination of the Quiroga chief of public security and his two bodyguards on Thursday, and the decapitated body found on Thursday in Puruándiro. Originally thought to have been the body belonging to the head found in Quiroga, it turned out to be the headless body of someone else.
