Correo has this report in today's edition. The mayor says San Miguel is as safe
as it ever was. Reminds me of the Groucho Marx line:

"Who are you gonna believe? Me or your own eyes......"

Note that the hotel association requested a meeting with the police chief. Instead he sent an underling who acknowledged that the city is not as safe as in times past. I guess she didn't get the mayor's memo....

A bad economy breeds crime everywhere in the world. Even San Miguel is not immune obviously.

The idea that a bad economy increases crime has been a generally accepted rule. However, the current recession in the USA violates that rule, as crime in the USA continues to decrease, despite the bad economy. Now people are questioning the idea that crime is linked to the economy.

My personal opinion is that everybody has an opinion, but nobody knows why the crime rate goes up or down This includes professionals in the field.

What is the source of your information that crime in the US has decreased during the current Great Recession?

I would note that crime and violence in the USA has been on a steady decline for many years, while crime and violence in Mexico appears to be increasing.

Crime rates in the USA have been noted to be going down for several years and are generally attributed
to a decline in the population of young males who are most generally the perpetrators. While I love generalizations
as much as the next middle aged white guy, the stats are actually showing good news in this regard. Comparing
stats between MX and the USA are like apples and oranges due to issues of fear/distrust of police, lack of insurance
vs a requirement that those of us with insurance must file a police report to get paid and a whole different mind set
about dealing with data. Mexico is a wonderful place though fraught with issues at present, no need to scoff at
the data to justify one's decision to spend time there. Provecho.

Here in Albuquerque, NM, they have taken to publishing photos of property crime perpetrators in the newspaper each week. Lately there has been an increase in the female variety - so I guess that we cannot use a sweeping broad brush to paint the younger males!
