Cecelia of mexicoferry called this morning and confirmed my cabin number and sailing date 11/22/02

Frankly, I'd been losing some faith, because of the many negative comments about this venture and particularly since the actual operator of the ferry service still hasn't got their website updated

I thought maybe I'd be the first, but according to the office, lotsa bookings and lotsa interest.

I certainly hope that this time the ferry service works out and look forward to many years of sailing

And if someone wants to browbeat me, at least wait until 11/22 - when, if the ferry doesn't leave, I'll gladly eat all the worms in the Mezcal bottles

Its a pleasant trip. I was on the inaugural in 99 and they are using the same ship. Small staterooms but entirely adequate for this short a trip. Casino. Dinning Room. Snack Bar (pricey on both). Had a nice Vegas style floor show. Not stabilized but if the weather is good no problem. Has anyone got the lowdown on car import in Progreso?

I contacted Banjercito and they have a branch at the Progreso port to process car import permits.

ferry arrival is 6 pm - and I presume it'll be after 8 till the vehicles are discharged and I doubt banjercito will be open at that time unless the ferry operators get some mexican cooperation.

I've got emails out trying to get an answer - till then I guess I'm prepared to camp out in my truck till the early morning.

The actual dock's got one of the longest access pier's in the world (6 miles). It would be sort of amusing to see a couple of 100 vehicles camping on it.

BTW - the banjercito process can be accelerated a little by registering on the internet

Do you know if Banjercito is set up yet at the Cancun port of Entry?

As to insurance I used these people last year and again this year(booked it last week) www.goodholiday.com you can book on line or at this phone # 1-800-667-7267, ask for Barry. They are on the west coast if you phone.

This is a recommendation from a satisfied customer.

Mexicoferry verbally confirmed my reservation about 2 weeks ago, with a cabin number

Charged my credit card about a week ago, including a single surcharge which I had expected, but had not been explained

Received brochure and printed confirmation last Thursday

Wow - I'm right behind the casino but at the opposite end of the main bar. Hope I'll have some green left by the time we hit Progreso.

Nice fluffy brochure, but very skimpy on ship details aside from floorplans, very heavy on promotion of Yucatan hotels and excursions.

My emails have been answered promptly. I understand the basic car paper documentation will take place aboard before landing. (I imagine they'll run the batch to Mexican officials as soon as docked)

Still mulling my insurance choices, leaning to a very short term internet policy and then upgrading to a major mexican company with lots of additional liablity. The basic internet policies strike me as low on price but even lower on coverage.

Oh yeah, the actual operator Yucatanexpress.com finally got their website online

The ship will have to leave New England at least a week before the first crossing from Tampa.

Any shipspotters out there?

New News about the Ferry from today´s paper.

(Information from Novedades de Quintana Roo for Tuesday Nov.5,2002)

As Jack mentions, it does seem to be taking shape and today´s paper said that the two States involved (Yucatan where it will land at Puerto Progreso and Quintana Roo where IT NOW SAYS IT WILL LAND AT PUERTO MORELOS AND NOT CALICA) are working on temporary permits for the cars. They are also working on the possibility that someone may arrive at one port and go back from the other one--this would imply an interstate cooperation heretofore unheard of--especially when it comes to car permits. Sometimes they won´t even let you take fruit from one State to another!

It mentions that it will be operating from Nov. 22 until ABOUT the end of April or May 2003 when it will return to its northern destination between Maine and Nova Scotia.

you're not going anywhere with that, check the yucatanexpress site and it advises you of single surcharges, so does every cruiseline in the world that I know of

Judging from the ship's floorplan I got the best room/location in my price bracket.

Booking direct wouldn't have saved me a dime, instead it wasted several weeks of phonecalls to people who didn't know what's going on and emails that never got answered.

I'm happy with mexicoferry.com, - now if only I can figure out if that ferry leaves N.E. on time, I'll be a happy camper. And guess, where more than likely I'll be getting that info.

I understood the same as Chuck when you stated there was a *single* (as in *one*) surcharge that you had expected but had not been explained.

I'm considering booking too, but I'm not as trusting as you. I'll wait and see if your ship sails before making a reservation. Especially since I'd be booking from Canada and getting my money back if this service tanks could be an issue.
