I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on unlocked cell phones. How the work and should I buy one in the states or should I wait until I get to Mexico?

You can pick up an unlocked used cell phone on ebay pretty cheap, around $20-30 US or so. Stick to GSM phones, CDMA (Verizon) coverage is limited.

You can buy a new basic cell phone in Mexico for around $40. You most likely could get it unlocked in Mexico, but by the time you buy the phone and then pay to get it unlocked you would be way ahead buying a used unlocked phone.

I tell people to search for "Unlocked GSM Quad band". You don't need quad band in the USA and Mexico, but you do for anywhere else on the planet.

Hi,

I bought my wife an American blackberry as a Christmas present. I told AT&T that I wanted to take it to Mexico and have my wife use it. They gave me an unlock code and all the instructions how to do it, step by step. When I finally had the time (about two months later) to do it, even with the detailed instructions, I was not able to accomplish the task. I called AT&T and was put in touch with a "Tech Support" advisor who walked me step by step through the process. Finally the "USA code" was unlocked, the Mexican chip from Tel Mex inserted and nothing else was needed. Her phone runs well and the only thing now is that I have to find the Spanish language on the phone, as all is in English and my Mexicana wife is having a little difficulty with the English o the phone.

Hope this helps. Maybe your American carrier can do the same for your existing phone.
