Haiti, mexico and the world effort

This may seem the wrong time, due to the extreme disaster and loss of life in Haiti, but here is a thought.
After years of bashing Mexico, the press still can not give credit where credit is due. Last night on the evening news, and this morning, Mexico TV stations, along with the government of Mexico are calling for people to donate and help Haiti in this time of need. Mexico has sent 2 navy ships and 3 airplanes of rescue workers, along with supplies, to Haiti. The link gives credit to Belize, Guyana ! among other nations , Belize?? .
I would bet Mexico is on site at this moment with supplies and personal but no mention of Mexico on any report I have read.

Why do you think this is so? You may say the U.S. news media is biased but I found no specific mention of assistance from Mexico on the BBC site either. Perhaps Mexico is not doing a good job of getting the word out? Or perhaps they are not being specific enough? The only mention of Mexico I found was on Fox News where it said Calderon issued a written statement that Mexico was "establishing contact" in order to "provide timely support". What is your source for what Mexico has sent?

When you say "the press," do you mean the U.S. press? Or do you mean the press outside of México in general?

Either way, I think you're mistaken:

Mexico To Send Rescue Teams, Doctors, Supplies To Haiti

MEXICO CITY (Dow Jones)--Mexican President Felipe Calderon said Wednesday the country is sending rescue workers, doctors, food and other assistance to Haiti, which has been devastated by a massive earthquake.
In a statement made at the presidential residence, Calderon said three planes will leave Wednesday for the Caribbean nation, carrying from 15 to 20 tons of food.
A Mexican Navy hospital ship will also head for Haiti with medical personnel and more than 50 tons of food, and another hospital ship will leave for Haiti at the weekend, he said.

From msnbc.com: International aid pledges
Mexico will send doctors, search-and-rescue dogs and infrastructure damage experts.

From Agence France Presse: World scrambles to help quake-hit Haiti
Cuba, which felt the quake, sent 30 doctors to add to its medical staff already in Haiti. Brazil said it was sending 10 million dollars in immediate aid, while Peru, Venezuela, Mexico, Colombia, Guatamala and Chile also promised help.

From the UK Channel 4 TV News: Haiti earthquake: aid supplies arriving
Mr Obama has spoken to the UN secretary-general and the leaders of Brazil, Canada, Mexico and Chile about coordinating efforts to assist Haiti. The UN will provide 10 million USD (£6.2 million) for the relief effort.

And, for those of us in Mexico who want to help... this includes you touristas and snowbirds who always have a fistful of pesos when you leave the country that you find you can't use at home:

The Centro de acopia (relief warehouse) for Haiti is also accepting cash donations. The "standard operating procedure" for making cash donations in this country, where credit cards are not the norm, and pay pal isn't well established are by direct deposit. ANY HSBC branch can take a deposit for the Centro de acopia. All you need is their account number.

This morning Yahoo news featured a headline photo showing a stack of boxes of rice clearly labeled "Cruz Roja Mexicana".

Returning from the tianguis this morning my girlfriend saw there is a Cruz Roja truck parked at a prominent intersection that is receiving collections to be sent to Haiti. As this is only a prominent intersection (Bucareli and Carpinteros de Paracho) in our neighborhood we imagine there are various others throughout town. This makes it easy to give a donation. She bought a case of 1 liter bottles of water from a nearby tienda to give them.
