Best route from San Miguel to Angangueo(Mariposas Sanctuario)

Does anyone know the best route driving from San Miguel de Allende to Angangueo? There are some "new" autopistas I don't think are on maps yet so thought I would go to the best source of info in Mexico to get the route. Also, approximately how long should it take? I am thinking about 4 hrs w/ the new roads-si? Feliz Navidad and gracias por su ayuda.

Nobody seems interested in corresponding with you on this question so here is what I would do if I were you. Drive from San Miguel down Route 51 to Celaya and continue on south to Maravatio and then directly south to Angangueo over back country roads. This is a highly uncomplicated journey although I know of no new autopistas which, even if they exist, are of uncertain consequence.

As you near Angangueo, do not be discouraged if the town, which is quite colorful, does not pop up where it is supposed to be per the map. It is down there. Trust me.

Angangueo, a mining town, is even more interesting when the butterflies are not around and Aunt Maude from Duluth is also absent. Go there during the off-season when the town is DELIVERENCE revisited. If everyone you see there seems to be suffering from Downs Syndrome, never mind; it´s a nice town with friendly people but I would try to land and find a room before dark.

Muchisimo gracias Hound Dog for answering my post. I will check that out on our very reliable maps. I've been to Angangueo before and it is as you described-I loved it and the people. We have a room @ Don Bruno already booked, so no sweat there.

I was thinking maybe the autopista just before entering Celaya(from SMA)might be an option if I headed East instead of West(which is what we do when we go to Troncones), I might hook up with a good road down by Acambaro, but will check out your route-am used to driving the back roads...

Thanks again and Feliz Navidad.

A great hotel. Those of you who have not been there should stay there.
