Cuernavaca will be all in the news this morning. Look for more hell to break loose among those vying to replace Beltran Leyva. This will cause a huge power vacuum. BL was allied with the Juarez cartel and the Zetas. More discord can be expected as El Chapo, who must be thrilled, moves to take over the northern regions. On the surface, it looks like great news for Calderon, but just as occurred with the downfall of the Arellano Felix brothers, the void will be filled by others.

I think that it is very interesting that the Mexican Navy conducted the operation rather than the SEDENA. Could it be that El Mayo got wind of BL's whereabouts and wanted to leak it to the government as he did with Ramon Arellano? But, if in this case, the Army has already been corrupted and could not be trusted with the information, why not give it to the Navy instead? Just sayin'.....

Reports now indicate that Navy seals were used to rappel down from helicopers onto the apartment compound. There goes my conspiracy theory. Glad to be wrong.

I agree Brian. We are happy to hear the news of the kingpins falling but then there is always a battle to fill the void and often those who replace him are even worse...

I don't know why this is so questionable. Every country has Marines, who are part of the Navy. Mexican Marines (who also provide the Presidential guards) are specialists at rapid deployments and military operations in difficult to reach places (like high-rise apartment houses, where you don't want to end up killing half the neighbors).

Most countries refer to all sailors as “marines.” I don't think that the Mexican Navy has any personnel that are designated as Marines or Seals in the sense that The US Navy has troops designated as Marines that are basically highly trained infantry.

One of my sons recently retired as a Chief Petty officer after a 30 year career in The US Navy and he told me that when his ship was in most foreign ports, all of the sailors were universally called marines.

I have learned that The Mexican Navy has had troops active in the present war on drugs since the beginning. You can read into that whatever you want. They may be more reliable than the Army troops, and maybe not.

The Mexican Navy and SEDENA are distinct from each other and under different leadership. I think that my initial concern (and that is all it was) was that perhaps whoever leaked the information, for whatever reason, didn't want to give it to SEDENA who have been in the forefront of the drug battle. But then again, isn't the closest military zone to Cuernavaca maintained by the Navy? If so, maybe the information could have beaten out of those taken into custody at the narco party a few nights before and the plan hurriedly put together with the nearby forces.

If anyone would like to read what some others are saying about this event, Mike Marizco (contributor to the Mexico City News) has an interesting website. He has a lot of contacts who know inside information much of which is good and others which are BS.

Finally, yesterday's El Mexicano has an alarming article which purports to have a DEA internal report to the Mexican government containing information about expected reprisals and violence directed not only at police but civilians as well. I haven't seen it picked up by the US press yet.

Brian, I have no idea of why, or who made the decision to use Navy troops for the raid and I don't think we ever will. I don't think (but I don't know) that Cuernavaca is in a Naval control district as there are two Army bases right here in town, plus there is another large Army base on the highway between here and México City.

The Army bases here in town must have been established many years ago before the city grew to the size it is now as one of them is an artillery base. It seems strange to me that there would be an artillery base in a city.

It is hard to tell any difference between Navy and Army personnel when we see a truck carrying them. When they are wearing their combat dress, they all look alike and we usually just assume that they are Army soldiers.

As to the news here in México, it is highly censored and we are not likely to ever get much in depth information from the news media. A few years ago the government tightly controlled the press here. Today, fear is the biggest censor. In recent years, if a reporter tries to give complete coverage of certain events, it will definitely shorten his life span. They are very careful of what they report, so there will very seldom be any in depth coverage of any controversial event.

I doubt if we will ever know why Navy troops were used for the recent raid. The foreign press engages in a lot of guesswork.

Does he mean that they all referred to themselves in English? __________ I think what is being said is that other countries refer to their sailors in some form of the word "marine" as they do not have a distinct separate branch that differentiates a sailor from a marine as in the US military. In the US a Marine is never referred to as a sailor, or vice-versa.

I think something is lost in the translation. Marine is the English word for Marinero. My wife is bi-lingual, she speaks English fluently. When we first met, she was telling me about her family. One of her brothers was a university student in México City at that time and she told me that two of his classmates were marines.

It took a few minutes to sort it out, but when she told me that they were Navy officers and that the Mexican Navy was paying for their education, I figured it out.

My son told me that everywhere he went in Europe and the Orient, any foreign person that spoke English always called the sailors marines.

La Isla has it right. There is really nothing to be confused about.

As a former merchant mariner and someone who comes from a family of such, in my experience there was always a distinction made between civilian and military. In general terms Navy personnel were known as sailors and we were merchant seaman.

The term marinero in Spanish can be translated as sailor or mariner or seaman.

The Mexican Navy does have their "marines" which is the Navy's infantry or the "Infantería de Marina de la Armada de México"

This is a great link. We have been using this service for a while.
