La Reliquia

What is La Reliquia? I was invited to attend one today, but I couldn't. I searched the internet and MexConnect to learn about Reliquia, but I found nothing other than a definition of "relic."

A reliquia is exactly that Rolly - an old antique or relic. I have never heard of it as an event I conferred with my in-house expert on Spanish language (Cristina) and she backs me up...

Here you go Rolly. And it is from your neck of the woods:

"In Torreon, Coahuila, the «reliquia» (relic) is
a popular religious expression that, with its
name, does not allude to that which is
ordinarily referred to in the Roman Catholic
vocabulary. The relic is a celebration that
arises from the popular devotion by virtue of
a promise that is done to a saint or invocation
of the Virgin of one’s devotion."

The information that MD has posted is kind of vague. Does La Reliquia refer to a vow made to a particular saint or Virgin? Does it take place on a particular day? Maybe Rolly could ask the friends who invited him to attend one for pertinent details.

Thanks Manny. It turns out that I do know what it is, I just never heard that name before. I've been involved with it every year since my arrival in Lerdo.

In this part of México there are special neighborhood celebrations (Las Reliquias) for The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. It's a very big deal here that runs from now through Dec 12..

I have written about it with many pictures here: http://rollybrook.com/guadalupe.htm

Rolly,
For a moment, you had me really worried there - I thought there might actually be something you DIDN'T know about life in Lerdo!! Delighted that I was wrong, and enjoy the celebrations, Tony
