I failed to mention that when the Bishop of San Cristóbal held his, quite serious, blessing of the San Cristóbal bridge ceremony, the religious ceremony was a community event of great importance. Thousands of believers turned out for the Bishop´s sanctioning of the new and imposing structure that was the key link between the Chiapas Depression and the long-isolated Chiapas Highlands and its informal capital of San Cristóbal in the Jovel Valley. This sort of religious cum civil ceremony is very important in the highlands and is not to be scoffed at by infidels thinking themselves intellectually superior to folks respecting religious traditiion that is a melding of Catholic and Pagan traditions. If you do not like this sort of stuff then stay away. The world is a big place and there is a niche for you somewhere else.
