The Bishop and Satan

It used to take about two hours or more to drive the rudimentary two lane twisting mountain road between Chiapa de Corzo and San Cristóbal de Las Casas and when they built the new autopista straight up the escarpment from Chiapa to San Cristóbal they cut the driving time to about 30 minutes and a magnificent drive it is but once it was completed about 2005. the vital San Cistóbal bridge which spanned a deep and imposing arroyo, turned out to be improperly constructed and too dangerous for traffic so it was necessary to delay the opening of the new autopista for a year or so until the bridge coud be reconstructed which it was eventually.

To make sure that the new bridge was safe for travel despite the fact that it was anchored on a sandy bottom, the Bishop of San Crsistóbal, a most important local church official, was brought in to bless the new fortified bridge and that was about three years ago and that bridge still stands today so I guess the lord prevails over the forces of evil at least so far.

I failed to mention that when the Bishop of San Cristóbal held his, quite serious, blessing of the San Cristóbal bridge ceremony, the religious ceremony was a community event of great importance. Thousands of believers turned out for the Bishop´s sanctioning of the new and imposing structure that was the key link between the Chiapas Depression and the long-isolated Chiapas Highlands and its informal capital of San Cristóbal in the Jovel Valley. This sort of religious cum civil ceremony is very important in the highlands and is not to be scoffed at by infidels thinking themselves intellectually superior to folks respecting religious traditiion that is a melding of Catholic and Pagan traditions.

If you do not like this sort of stuff then stay away. The world is a big place and there is a niche for you somewhere else.
