The drive from Tuxtla Gutierrez to the Jovel Valley used to be a two hour drive skirting precipitous cliifs over twisting and dangerous two lane roads through various climatalogical zones from about 1,300 feet to 7,000 feet and the drive was at best exciting and at worst terrifying and in about 2006 they built the new autopista from Chiapa de Corzo to San Cristóbal de Las Casas straight up the escarpment and a magnificent roadway came into existence except that the San Cristóbal high bridge over the deep canyon was built on unstable ground or, more likely, the contractor employed bridge- building techniques unsuited to the terrain and the inferior bridge displayed signs of less than acceptable construction so they took two years to rebuild the damn thing and just to make sure it was sanctioned by God they brought in the Archbishop of San Cristóbal who blessed the damn thing and now it, so far, works like a charm. That is one magnificent drive as one rises from Chiapa de Corzo to the heights of San Cristobal in about 40 kilometers straight up that splendid escarpment. I´m impressed.
