Need hotel or B&Brecommendationca SMA

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hi Everyone~ I will be arriving in SMA in January to begin my "short List" tour of possible retirement locations in Mexico that I am considering. Does anyone know of a good cheap to mid range hotel or B&B that is fairly central...relatively quiet, safe, clean, comfortable?
I have my new lonely planet guide but would love to get some leads, advice and reviews from the forum. THANKS!

Mid range: check out the Posada de las Monjas and the Quinta Loreto as well as the Hotel Real de Minas, the latter having "specials" this season. All are within walking range of the town center.

Check www.experience-san-miguel-de-allende.com Lists with price ranges and photos.

Here are three suggestions that, I think, fit your criteria. All three have rates between $50-$100 USD per night.

Casa Crayola

Casa de Reyna

Casa Maricela

You may find some more choices and comments about these and other properties here and here.

Cheers,
Ken

When we were in SMA in August, we made reservations through the Best Western International site and got a rate of $54USD per night. Actually, the front desk was surprised by the rate and did honor it. At that time, it was a great rate in comparison to other hotels and it was an adequate Best Western. They have secure parking in the rear and we just walked everywhere we wanted to go.

Secure parking is available at the three places I mentioned earlier...and of course is only important if you're driving.

I didn't like the Best Western very well....but then, we were there at the normal high rate. I'd have liked it better at CG's rate. lol.

Maybe you didn't notice but I used the descriptor: adequate. In my book, that is like giving a "C" or neutral rating. We had a ground floor room near the front desk and there were really no negatives about the room. The wireless Internet was not working the first night but they did get it up and running by the time I had my morning coffee. The secure parking was an issue for us since the van aka: MEXICO SHOPPING CART was almost to the ceiling with treasures purchased along the way. After Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato and Leon, it was full to the ceiling and ready for the rocket ride north to the border!

I too, got reservations online and got a great price on a big Suite. It had 2 fantastic big windows that opened to a courtyard and you could see the parked cars. I would definitely get the second floor. The suite was great but I can't remember the price ( seemed like $97.) . The desk also "seemed surprised" at the price we received. I would NEVER pay their posted prices. They were ridiculous.

The regular rooms were nice but had only one small window to the courtyard and I would have felt too closed in.

Complimentary Breakfast was nice in the courtyard. Not full with eggs and such but nice.

Desk people spoke no English most of the time. It was advertised as computer provided and it was not.

The English Channel TV was very important to us as we like to lay down in the evenings, watch TV and rest.

If you have a car, this is a good place for parking.

If I were you, I would go to "Falling in Love with San Miguel" website by Carol Schmidt and read all they have to say about the Hotels and B&B's. They know all the good deals in town usually or someone on the Forum will help you.

Good Luck

I had no idea that there were larger rooms on the second floor but then again, all we do is sleep in the room and don't spend much time there. You are correct about the one window but we really did not feel confined. I will state that the walk up the hill towards "Centro" was a bit of a hike but then again one gets to walk back downhill to their accommodations after dinner.

In August, there was one computer available just off the lobby and it was getting a workout from the German tour bus group that was there for the night. There was one helpful English speaking individual there on the night shift, who explained that the wireless was not working. Yes, they were very surprised by the quoted rate from Best Western International but had no problem honoring it once they figured out where it came from.

Not being breakfast eaters, we did not partake of the breakfast offering. We travel with our own coffee maker and that is what we require to get rolling in the morning.
